The famous grocery store target which is like a nicer Walmart has had all its stores in Canada closed forever!

    Yep, Target missed the mark.

Not at all surprising, no one I knew really liked shopping there.

    Because the store sucked.

tl;dr it had nothing to sell, felt like death when you walked in, had nothing unique to offer, and had worse prices than the store /literally/ next door.

Among many issues, their Canadian website was rather underwhelming for such a large store chain in 2015 (not much other than a store locator and the weekly sale flyer).

And the title is misleading, should read something like "Target to close all their Canada stores", it's not like we/our government kicked them out or anything.

Yeah, they closed their stores due to not getting sales, they would not be able to turn a profit until.... 2021 iirc, so it was not lucrative, failed business venture on their part.

They're taking the multi-million dollar loss and investing elsewhere.

I really like Target here in the US. I don't understand why they opened so many stores there before knowing how they would fare and finding the right business plan. I imagine whoever implemented the Canadian business plan back when they opened the stores got a promotion and has moved on to bigger things now. At least that's how it is where I work.

Target bought the leases of many "Zellers" stores (a long-established similar low-cost dept. store) that were going out of business. A great opportunity to seize a large collection of large retail locations in already established commercial areas. I'm guessing they rushed through the expansion/move to seize that unique opportunity without thinking through all the other aspects. After all, Zellers went out of business for a reason...

Ironically everyone misses Zellers, we just aren't as frumpy these days.
If we want stock product or general outlets there's Wal-Mart, Sears, The Bay, etc.

We shop a lot online, and have unique boutiques everywhere.
Speaking personally from Edmonton, it was like trying to sell a 7/11 hotdog for the same price and expectation of filet mignon.

    We aint 'bout that life.

I love Target. I despise Walmart.

I only shop at three places:

    Tom Thumb (grocery store)
    Target
    Dollar Tree

Target, like JC Penny, has tried to change too much, too quickly. That never works out well.

All of the Targets I have been too here in the US are nice, clean, organized, and have friendly people working in them. They have some good sales, and ALWAYS have AWESOME clearance racks full of stuff!

Walmart is nasty, disgusting, filthy, has such hateful and rude employees, they are on the verge of being violent.

Im one of those people who buy pretty much the same thing every paycheck, and I have done my comparison shopping, and Target came out on top at $3.00 less in total.
Maybe only $3.00, but at least its a clean, safe place to shop, the employees are willing to help, and I get treated like an actual human being.

    *******************************

Most people don't realize this, but Target was the FIRST "mega store", with everything under one roof.

We moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area sometime in the late 60's. When we moved from one side of the the metro area to the other, we were near a Target store. This was in the early 70's now.

This Target had everything.......a full service grocery store, an automotive department with a full service automotive bay, furniture, and all the other regular stuff Targets have always carried.....clothes, toys, jewelry, electronics.......

WHY they ever downgraded to smaller Targets in the late 70's, I dont know.
They didn't start building super Targets again, until that evil company Walmart started taking over.

I miss the good old days.

    ****************************

Even if Target got a little more expensive, I wouldn't mind.
It's worth the price for a nice clean, organized store, with friendly employees, who treat you like an actual human being.
