Very interesting. So the government that actively covered up child sexual abuse in the 1980s is actually the most transparent in the whole world. Who would have thought it?

Sadly I think being 'most transparent' isn't saying much these days.

Still, the availability of Government expenditure information that they talk about in the article seems to be positive.

I think this is one of the biggest problems with calling most governments transparent:

It's very easy to find the information. Interpreting it in a meaningful or holistic way is much harder.

And, of course, being the most transparent means only that the UK opens up more information than other countries do. In being comparative, it doesn't really mean that the UK is sufficiently transparent, just that others are certainly not. And while the transparency is undoubtedly there, important policy decisions are still not quite as open for public review as they might be, which can deeply impact the public's knowledge and therefore vote. Or the information's there, but the public in general has very little they can do about it even if it's comprehensible.

Nonetheless, it's good to have some sort of positive report from a generally negative political environment. But while we're at it, FPTP in the Commons and the structure of the Lords need an overhaul, too. That's a big change that would improve British democracy.

The British public would agree with you on the need to reform the Lord
