So Internet Explorer, the name, will stop. What are your thoughts about this? Do you think it's a good idea? A bad idea?

    More here

Personally, I'm not sure what to think of it. I know IE might suffer from its image, but on the other hand.. Internet Explorer is such a well-known brand. Let me know what you think of it! :icon_bigg

I don't like internet explorer because it seems that I always have problems with it and it can be very slow.

If they replaced IE with Chrome, life would just be better.

Rebranding IE is the only thing they can do, IE has the biggest market share in web browsers atm (based on unique users) but chrome has the biggest market share in internet activity. Basically the younger generations, the people who use internet often mostly use chrome. If Microsoft wants to get back a lot of the active internet users it has to do something..

Personally I don't see a problem with IE, Chrome is actually buggier. IE just feels dated and chrome is a lot more user friendly that's why I use chrome :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

    You can't kill a zombie.

I used netscape as soon as I had the chance, and I never looked back since then. Firebird, firefox, iceweasel... And whatever it comes to my way on the future. The Mozilla foundation is doing a good thing, and has been doing it for years. I have had the pleasure to get to know some of their coworkers, and all I can say is that they are people you can trust.

Give me open source, give me real security and give me speed.

I don't care how many users a browser has, as long as it suits my own personal needs and it is open source. Chrome does not suit my own personal needs right now, that is why I do not use it nor intend to use it on the future... At least in my own computer.

Some companies are still using IE and stuff like that, and this forces me to have contact with this product and even be interested on how it works, but when I am home I use whatever I please.

The name changes but I assume many assets will be the same.

But if it truly is dead:

Oh no, whatever will I do?

TBH, I found IE helpful sometimes when something Flash-related or whatever wouldn't work on Chrome. It always worked on IE. But I don't know if that's such a problem anymore.

Apparently IE is now catching up with other browsers, and some tests have said it's actually the best for Windows 8. Chrome can also be a huge drain on computers. I imagine they invested so much money to get it to compete that they need to rebrand it, because IE has such a bad reputation that most people don't use it and don't know what would make it a bad browser, but will be more than happy to say that it's the worst browser out there.

...that being said, I'm a pretty diehard fan of Chrome.

As others have commented (here and elsewhere), the IE name carries...certain baggage. If nothing else, a new name brings new start--or at least MS can hope.

That said, it seems so strange to me. At one time, about 15 years ago, IE was a massive standard. It had the most market share. A lot of sites would only render properly with IE. I think I heard of some sites that just plain required IE. And the alternative browsers were so marginal back then. Netscape, which had been huge, was almost totally killed off, or so it seemed. Others never had much share to begin with.

Wouldn't totally surprise me, since they make both products. MS undoubtedly knows Windows better than anyone else, and that gives an advantage for making application software that will run well on Windows.

Indeed, this was cited as one reason why MS Office became so dominant on Windows back in the 90s. MS knew the OS much better than the developers of WordPerfect (which was once a huge standard) did.

I'm torn between calling it "Netscape Explorer" or "Internet Navigator".

Both of those have a fresh, original feel. =p

Generally, I use Chrome, rarely IE, and even more rarely Slowzilla Firefox.

Sounds like Microsoft wants IE to die, so they can once again be the new browser on the block.

As a web developer, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand Internet Explorer has been the bane of my existence since day one (particularly IE6 and 7, though up through 9 is pretty bad), but the latest version is actually pretty decent. I'm happy to see a hated product disappear, but on the other hand I'm glad Microsoft will continue to develop the trident rendering engine with their new browser. I don't think it would be good for WebKit/Blink to completely dominate (even if I use Chrome) and have a small group of people determining the standards for the entire web.

But what will I use to download Firefox when I get a new computer?

Internet Explorer is good for one thing - downloading a new browser.
I still think it's still better than Ubuntu's built in browser at least.

Internet Explorer I haven't used in years. I tend to go with Firefox, because Chrome has had some shady accusations made against it.

As for Microsoft killing off Internet Explorer. Okay, that's fine. Just make this new product user-friendly, and quit with the gimmicky stuff. It's confusing, not helpful.

But I may just be old-fashioned and miss the days of Windows XP...

I personally use Opera. I like it. IE however is my secondary browser, and it is pretty good. That said, people with Vista are stuck on what? IE9? IE11 at least is a good browser. Personally I don't like Chrome's interface. It feels dumbed-down to me. I want to do things directly from the browser, not always the webpage. Opera's menu is IMO more convenient than Chrime's.

Well, it could be argued that if you are stuck with Vista, not being able to run the latest IE is the least of your problems.
