Wouldn't the road closed barriers and signs have gotten the idea across...

You'd think, but I'm going to be in his defense a bit, here.

At least in Chicago, I've been lead to dead ends, and I've also been told to turn into oncoming traffic while using a GPS. You'd think they'd label everything, but there are some areas where there are none.

Ya Chicago's traffic and gps is a nightmare. Even driving in the city is horrible. Once me and my aunt and cousin were in a little accident in the city.

I've always wondered why people would spend $ on a GPS. I tend to map out my route ahead of time, bearing some alternatives in mind, and just use common sense, and the sun for a sense of direction, if possible/need be, and I've seldom gotten lost. Even so, I always just ask somebody, and have never had a problem, or any significant delays.

I've also noted that such devices give weird directions...ones that might appear to be the shortest route, but take longer due to traffic and tolls.

And here is proof that such devices should henceforth be destroyed! :icon_twis

If only GPS devices worked as well as they do in video games.

People want GPS to think for them, but it's not a substitute for the human mind.

Especially considering that he was elderly--I feel like some older people tend to think technology is more magical and infallible than it actually is.

He should have been able to see that the bridge... wasn't there.... But I guess sometimes if you're lost you freak out and do stupid stuff, maybe? Still, if visibility is low, it's dark, etc, you drive slow and carefully so you should have enough time to stop should any obstacle come up.... Especially in unknown areas.
