The Public Policy Research Lab at Louisiana State University conducted a survey within the state. The good news is that well over 90% of people believe that we should not be refused service simply for being gay or trans*. The bad news?

Roughly one third of everyone in Louisiana, about 36%, believe that an employer should be able to fire you if you are gay or trans*. This literally means that if you are walking around the streets of Louisiana one out of every three people you meet believe that it is acceptable to fire you on the basis of your sexual orientation or gender identity.

    The report is here.

And this is why I say continually that a substantial minority of the country is evil. People tend not to want to hear that though. Normatively, the world is supposed to shit lilacs and rainbows.

While that stat sucks... I'm not too surprised. Considering that is the same state that brings us "wholesome christian entertainment" like Duck Dynasty....

Well, it is also the same state that brings in that entirely wholesome, family friendly entertainment on Paczki Day.

I lived near New Orleans for a few years and this in no way surprises me.

And this is the state that has New Orleans. Between the murdering, looting, drinking, and public sex, they can't exactly go claiming the moral high road here.

So, somebody went from door to door of every single house in Louisiana and asked them the questions and marked down the answers which lead to the percentage given by this study? That must have taken years.

I wonder how this breaks down by political party, age and region...it says the report contains this, but I'm not seeing it. I bet in the more rural, Republican, born-again areas, the % is a good deal higher that the major urban areas.

I'd love to see New Orleans one day, but that almost sounds like another world, compared to the rest of the state. Know a lot of people who really like that town.

This is why I'm glad I don't live in the South.

This is so sad. I wish I could fire someone based on their bigot orientation.

I work for an employer in a northern state, and that's how they (the owners) feel. They want the right to fire an employee for being openly gay or lesbian, yet they wouldn't refuse a paying gay or lesbian customer.

To offer a more optimistic view it could simply be that they believe employers should have the right to fire for anything, not just being gay (but since the survey asked). Although, it's a bit contradictory to say you can't refuse service to someone gay but you can fire them for being gay. I can't really reconcile those two views together. It seems all or nothing to me, but not a mix!
