I still don't understand what they have to gain by these kinds of bans.

Will banning gay marriage stop gay couples from existing? nope.

Will banning gay marriage have any effect on straight marriages? nope.

There is literally no gain I can see from it :/

I see it as very similar to the ban on interracial marriages. All the arguments once held against interracial marriage (it will destroy life as we know it, it will damage the family, the Bible said it is forbidden) and now seeming completely prehistoric are being regurgitated with the same-sex marriage debate. I think the parallel highlights where there comes a time when something is so wrong that the state has to take the first steps to create change, even if it leaves some dragging their heels.

I have just been left utterly speechless though in learning that interaccial marriage was banned until 2000 in Alabama. Two Zero Zero Zero. A year when we had so many good films like Gladiator, XMen, and Castaway to name a few, the advent of camera phones, MP3 players (the iPod would come a year later)....and yet people were banned from marrying outside their race in Alabama. Craziness.

Excuse my language, but to be honest, I don't give a fuck about the Bible. I care about the Constitution which gives power to the People of the United States of America... and limits to the government. We have freedom of religion, which means Church and State should be divided. Meaning religion shouldn't affect any laws.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but I'm not a "politically correct" person.

I think the states might be worrying that the Supreme Court would rule this to be a matter at the federal level. Were that to be the case, a nationwide ban could be passed by a conservative congress, rather than just bans at the state-level. Considering the controversy surrounding same-sex marriage, there could be a constant battle over legalization and prohibition, where the legal status of a couple could fluctuate every several years. Not only that, but there may also a concern for the preservation of state rights.

Also, if state-wide marriage bans are upheld, that means state-wide laws allowing same-sex marriage are allowed as well.

Actually, you're being quite politically correct.

And I mean that in a good way (why is "Politically Correct" ever used as an insult? It's almost saying "Yeah, you're right!)

We live in world of many religions therefore no religion should control how government is run. I may be a christian but in no way should goverment be a religious organization.

I think it would be better for everyone if they just gave up and accepted that same-sex marriage will eventually be legal throughout the US, whether they like it or not. Their views represent only a small minority of Americans who oppose same-sex marriage, and that minority is shrinking.

A bunch of dinosaurs, out of touch with modern opinions. They probably opposed interracial marriages as well.

Incalculable damage to our civic life, huh?
    You know why it's incalculable?
    Because it's bullshit that's why.

Politically Correct means when you try not to offend different groups of people. Many "politically correct" don't say their "truest" opinions just to not offend people. What I said could have offended some Christians.

I do hope the Supreme Court sees it our way and rules to legalize same-sex marriage. I would be ecstatic if they do. We pretty much have 4 guaranteed votes on our side, and if Justice Kennedy votes on our side, then that's all it takes to legalize same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The thing that worries me is the fact that this entire movement can be determined by the opinion of 1 on a 9 justice court.

Also, the states on the list weren't at all surprising. Typical right-wing states wishing to push for typical right-wing movements.
It may of been "banned" in Alabama, but the law had no effect at all because the Supreme Court ruled all interracial marriage bans unconstitutional in 1967. Alabama simply didn't repeal it until 2000. Another example would be that homosexual sex is still illegal in Louisiana law, but the law has no effect at all because the Supreme Court ruled all those bans unconstitutional in 2003. Basically, the law is still on the books until they decide to repeal it. It doesn't make a difference, but it's still there.

Specifically, Christians who don't believe in separation of church and state. And I have met them, but I don't think anyone on this site is in support of theocracy of any kind.

:eusa_clap I'm a Christian and I agree with everything you said. America isn't a theocracy and while I treasure having the freedom to practice my religion, I am disgusted by what people do in the name of "religious freedom." (seriously guys, just call it what it is, justifying hate).

Gay men are still being arrested for being gay in Louisiana (2013) It can make a difference if you have a rogue Sherriff's Department on a power trip interpreting the law.

There has been some conservatives in the southern ohio northern kentucky area that have recently come out in support of the Supreme court allowing gay marriage in all states, despite their personal objection to gay marriage being legal. The reasoning is you shouldn't have substantially different laws for marriage and licenses issued in one state not being accepted in another state.
