Let's make no mistake, Rand Paul, who just declared his candidacy for the republican nomination is no libertarian.

Here is a particular gem of effluvium that gushed forth from his pie-hole a few days ago in a speech given to a gathering of pastors:

..So much for separation of church and state...

Well he might be right, but I hope he realizes that if that's true, Islam can also be a part of U.S. government. I bet he'd be horrified at that idea. And thus reveal himself to be a hypocrite.

I'm not a fan of Rand Paul and I don't like how he's being touted as some kind of "libertarian" alternative to the straight-up conservatives like Ted Cruz. He is definitely no libertarian.

Rand Paul is a joke and he won't get very far any way. And he is in no way a libertarian.

Ryuichi is correct. Freedom of religion is guaranteed not just be the Free Exercise Clause but also the Establishment Clause. Simply, the government must allow the free exercise of religion, and part of that means not establishing a certain religion as the state religion. To have "religion in government" as Rand wants would give us a state religion, because when he says he wants religion in government, he really means Christianity. He doesn't want Islam in government, for example.

Rand Paul is a flip flopper too. He cannot be trusted on any issue. He is desperate for votes now so he keeps going farther to the right and that is only gonna hurt him and every other candidate and make Hilary our next president.

Rand Paul is no Libertarian, and nor is he going to "broaden the base" of GOP voters. Rand Paul is a conveniently repackaged Tea Partier with extreme right-wing views on both economic and social issues.

Rand Paul has said on the record that he opposes the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He thinks that not only should private business owners be able to turn away gays, but also Blacks, Muslims, or any other minority that a bigoted business owner happens to hate. Rand Paul says that student loan reform would "Cause our society to collapse." He calls marriage equality "a moral crisis" and says, "Behavior does not get protection from discrimination." Rand Paul thinks that more and more tax giveaways for the rich, and a regressive income tax is "a more fair and balanced tax system."

Rand Paul is not a libertarian, is not LGBT-friendly and is not a moderate in any sense of the word. He's a run-of-the-mill Tea Partier who has managed to repackage his extreme views into a less divisive and polarizing spiel than, say, Ted Cruz.

Rand Paul is a Libertarian the same way I'm Queen of England. It's always cute to see people who have no chance at becoming President throw their hat into the political ring, though. The GOP debates are growing to be even greater fodder for SNL.

Running for president can help get you some of that sweet, sweet campaign cash. Don't even need to be a serious candidate, and that might even make it harder.

Republican Nomination. Good luck with that. I bet the Republicans wont even nominate him because he keeps hopping the fence on a bunch of issues. Well, as I hear this old saying. You keep hopping the fence, you're gonna get impaled by it.

Kinda makes you wonder if he does this for the moderate votes or to drive voters into a state of confusion.

Simply put, I don't like Rand Paul because of his "behavior."

I could have sworn he was so far to the right when President Obama was just going into his second term. Or am I mixing him up with someone else.

Strategically, it's not a bad choice or time for him... in a way. Once Jeb Bush is running Rand will probably join the team the way Hilary joined Obama in order to be appointed Secretary of State. Perhaps Rand has this in mind.

I was reading today that apparently Hillary Clinton is going to have her second attempt at running for President?

If so this will be an interesting election!

Yeah, Hilary will probably announce her candidacy soon, but if she wins, it'll be only the second time a party has one won three times in a row since 1988 (before that it was 1948). So I guess the odds are not in her favor.

Thanks for the education to you, AG, and to all the preceding posters. I read up on him. First, I learned he is short. Have we ever had any short Presidents? Second, I learned he is/was a physician. I guess the God complex that comes with that leads them to think they can do anything. Howard Dean of Vermont is/was also a physician who tried for the White House and didn't make it.

I see the word Tea Party ... and I'm gone. Thanks for the heads up. This next election will probably be more of a mess than this last one. I guess the slogan "it gets better" doesn't apply here.

I agree with all of you there's no way he's a libertarian. He's a total republican. He's not winning though.
