Another Secular Talk post; Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee claims the LGBT+ community wants to get rid of churches and religion.

Frankly, I love church. It's a great way for me to express my opinions, connect with friends, and for myself worship a god I believe in (for the most part)
Shutting down the churches sounds extremely absurd.

Mike Huckabee is a crackpot old fool and he is basing his opinion on absolutely nothing, like a lot of these sensationalist fear-mongering politicians do.

He is doing nothing more than furthering this stupid false dichotomy that you're either Gay or your Christian and you must take a side in the great American Culture War between Homosexuality and Religion.

Queer Christian over here :smilewave Mr. Huckabee, I swear we exist!

Sarcasm aside, it's honestly ridiculous to see how many of my friends and acquaintances in the Christian community don't believe that gay Christians exist. All some people see is the supposed "threat" we pose to their way of life (oh the irony). Sadly for several Christians I know, the thought that someone can be gay and Christian is an absurd notion that goes against "God's nature." It was a position I struggled to get over when I accepted myself.

I shall always be frustrated with the likes of Mr. Huckabee :bang:

While I don't agree with organized religions, shutting down churches is one of the first steps to a fascist government regime like in China, North Korea or the old Soviet Union and Berlin.

Most churches don't even mention lgbt rights in their teachings. People think the Catholic church is very homophobic but that's a common misconception, it depends on the person and they just tend to blame it on jesus hating gays. but he never said he does...so I don't think abolishing churches will change anything

There's a lot of LGBT Christians out there, so that claim is stupid...As for me, I dislike religion...But I don't speak for all of us, everyone has their own opinion, so I have to respect them...

I have no intention of shutting them down, but I would like to tax them for the public services they receive; it only seems fair.

That is the problem with the Republican Party. They don't think there is any such thing as a christian that is for gay rights and for abortion rights and so on. But they are completely wrong on that part and there are several what I call progressive christians in America and that group is just gonna keep getting stronger. It's not that I exactly believe in organized religion such as church because I don't because I think church sometimes distracts people from thinking for themselves and coming up with their own logic. When people say "oh my pastor told me this" or "my friend told me this" I tend to take them less seriously and my advice to any christian is do the research yourself before you come to any conclusions.

The Catholic Church *is* extremely homophobic. It's true that there are parishes that are more accepting, but both the leadership and the church as an institution are very homophobic.

When did the LGBT community claim they wanted churches and religion to be gone? All they asked for was basic human rights and marriage and for christians to stop decided who we love!

I agree with you that the number of progressive Christians is growing. However, they could be louder.

As a gay Christian who attends church on a bi-weekly basis, I cannot fathom this man's logic (or lack thereof).

This is what they do, they lie or grossly distort the truth. Clearly they are delusional since they think they are "good Christians" and good people don't slander others. It's obvious which side is right in this whole fight over equality. If you have to continuously make up new lies you are clearly on the side that will eventually lose or at least become a fringe psycho minority.

Do we make up lies and distort facts about our opponents? I can't think of any examples, but then I'm biased toward our side.

What a nut. Bigots need to go, not churches. There are quite a few good churches/denominations out there.
