I just read that Leelah's Law has been passed and I'm PSYCHED!!!! For those of you who don't know or haven't heard, as a result of the widely publicized suicide of Leelah Alcorn, petitioners around the country started trying to ban conversation therapy. These are tactics, generally involving pain which cause gay and trans people to associate their gender expression or sexuality with pain, "turning" them straight and cis. It's cruel and doesn't work and WE WON THIS ROUND SO BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAIGN!!!!!!!!!!!! Now the bastards who have been literally torturing minors cannot legally do it. You may now carry on with your lives. (!)(!)(*hug*)
Wait what. I heard president Obama condemned those practices and the petition on Whitehouse website got a formal response, but I haven't heard any actual law that got passed yet.
Dammit. I shouldn't believe gossip. I heard some people talking about a law to day and read something on it, but it was false... still, progress is progress, and it's a good start. Guess I should edit that.
It's been called that since the petition started, shortly after Leelah's death. And yeah, nothing exactly official about it, yet. The White House has seen it, and given word on it, and what we're seeing really is progress. They're looking at it, for one thing.
