    Whilst the case was absolutely pivotal for gay rights, and the media and public reaction to the case certainly raised the discussion of sexuality, discrimination and hate crimes it is debatable whether the case itself was actually anti-gay hate crime so its probably best to label this as "Matthew Shepard became the victim of a potentially antigay hate crime" - we just don't know for sure.

    There are reports that at least one of the murderers were themselves quite open in having gay relationships, and the crime was more the result of drugs.
