Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is to marry his partner today (Friday). Same sex marriage was legalised in Luxembourg in January this year. The deputy Prime Minister is also openly gay, but has so far not announced any plans to marry.

Good luck to the happy couple.

    Wow, pretty cool.

I actually found some pictures and an article and it's nice to see a gay man with his husband while on official functions. Hope to one day see something similar in Red State America.

Agreed, it is lovely to see, but at the same time shocking that it is so shocking, even to us.

The fact our reaction is "wow, that is amazing" probably says a lot about how even today we don't really get to see gay couples in the news outside of the celebrity circles.

    Very nice to see.

I've always wondered about Luxembourg. It sounds like a ritzy place, where everything is Luxurious, and DeLuxe.

    Congratulations to both of them!

In my opinion RTL.lu is completely right about it:
Source: Xavier Bettel a Gauthier Destenay hu sech d'Jo-Wuert ginn* (luxembougish)

The quote means: "A head of the government, who marries his same-sex partner, is not yet everyday/routine/common/something that happens every day)"

And it's true, it's not something we see every day. In fact, it's something very very rare, and there was press from around the world to witness the marriage.

For those who can read Luxembourgish, you should read the article I placed here. It's very interesting. =)

    * Xavier Bettel and Gauthier Destenay have given each other the "yes word" - that's the Luxembourgish way of saying that you accepted the marriage proposal. It cognates with the Dutch "jawoord" and German "Jawort".
