The title made me thought the author of the letter was having cancer and thought God gave it to her so she write to a journalist about it.

But ah well, more hate, less sense.

I'm going to be so happy when Ireland legalises same sex marriage via referendum.

It will most likely pass but I'm not getting my hopes up too much. The young, student and urban population who are more likely to support the yes campaign in theory may not make the effort to go out to vote on the day. This was the case during the Scottish referendum. The older, the more conservative and the rural usually have a higher voter turnout. I follow Sinn Fein on Facebook, they're the largest party in Ireland and they are ardently backing the Yes campaign, but even their supporters seem split down the middle as the old Bible question rears its ugly head.

    Same.

What really baffles me about the letter though is, they didn't say the person was ugly just once, but twice!

    That maturity, LOL.

That letter is full of hatred and stupid prejudices. As you say, it's absolutely disgusting.

I'm still utterly shocked that a human being thought there was some justification for starting off by saying "Sorry about your cancer, but..."

It's not the "Sorry about your cancer, but..." that's the problem. It's everything that came after the but that's the problem, where they claimed that the cancer was their God's divine wrath manifesting in the form of cancer.

This straight up reminds me of growing up, when people like this were praying for us to die of AIDS, claiming that AIDS was their God's divine wrath manifest.

I'm confused which one do we hate? The tweeter? Or the one who wrote the letter?

The person, Una, the tweeter supports same sex marriage in Ireland. Somebody wrote a mean letter to her because of her supporting.

The entire letter seems so exaggeratedly immature and bigoted. When I imagine the person who wrote such a thing, I feel unsafe.

Oh, I know. I'm not disregarding that, at all. All I'm saying here is that it baffles me why someone expected to be known as a decent person by starting off a letter disregarding someone's fucking cancer. Yes, the worse part is all the stuff coming afterwards. It just really goes to show what kind of person you are when you say something like "Sorry about your cancer/polio/genocide of your entire race/etc. but..." and expect people to believe you're someone with good morals.

People like this think they're on the right side of history?
