LGBT News Ireland Holds Gay Marriage Referendum

Do any of you UKers or Irish members know if coverage of the referendums will be on BBC later tonight? I may have to have a watch party this afternoon. Here's to having the luck of the Irish today, and make sure to go and VOTE! ✔

 

My Irish friend said him and everyone he knows is off to vote yes, so hopefully it's a yes. But I'm in the same boat as you Foz, I just keep on thinking about the election polls.

Homosexual acts were illegal in Ireland as late as 1993! The world is watching you, Ireland, and the implications of this vote will go far beyond the borders of your Emerald Isle.

If you're Irish, and you are living there, I hope you have voted!

May the best option win (and we all know what that is)!

My favorite band, Snow Patrol, has tweeted that people should vote yes! In UPPERCASE LETTERS, DAGNABIT! I'm gonna cheer for Ireland! Let's go! My ex is from Ireland! I hope his ass votes!

Although I'm not Irish, I really hope it pasts. It will make the Republic of Ireland the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage through popular vote. It will set a great example for other countries, especially Eastern Europe. People are always complaining about the "gay agenda attacking Christians". Well, if a Catholic country can pass same-sex marriage through popular vote, then I'd really like to see their response to "Christians being attacked".

I've been looking closely at articles relating to this. I'm curious when the results will be posted. I normally don't get interested in the politics of Third World countries, but this definitely has my attention.

 

A sizable number of American Protestants do not consider Catholics to be christians. So, they're covered.

 

Most baptists do not consider any other denominations Christian.

 

I wasn't necessarily referring to just American Christians. Still, it definitely will take a jab at all anti-LGBT Christians if this passes.

 

Well, Times up. Now all that's left to do is wait till tomorrow for the results.
I think it will pass with around 55-60% Yes. Fingers crossed!

 

I'm probably just being dense here, but you're not referring to Ireland as a third world country, are you?

 

I really hope this passes. My guess is that it will. I will be watching this veeery closely.

 

I'm not sure how people most interpret the term "Third World", but I don't mean it in terms of being "under developed". I'll assume this is what you believed I meant, but I'm aware that the Republic of Ireland is a very nice, prosperous country. Sorry if I worded myself poorly or if I offended any Irish people here. I meant "Third World" as in political alliances, because I never really had an interest in countries that don't get involved with disputes. Normally, I only look into foreign politics if there's a lot of history behind it, kind of like the Crimea dispute or North/South Korea.

 

You could call Ireland a Third World country if you lived in the 80's or before (It orginally means a country not belonging to the First World (NATO) or Second World (Soviet-aligned). But now it's not really appropriate any more, since the meaning has shifted to underdeveloped and almost only historians use that definition if they talk about the Cold War.

It'd be like calling party-goers 'gay', because they have a fun time.
