I've never really been into football but it always saddens me to see controversies like this in sport as I know how much all kinds sports mean to different people.

Now if we can just get the IOC, NCAA and Formula 1 in court, we will be talking.

Fifa are very corrupt. How can a country like Qatar get to host the world cup in the first place. Countries were bidding for a "summer world cup" and now they want to move it to the winter. Clearly something dodgy going on.

I hope Sepp Blatter doesnt win the election this Friday but I have feeling he will.

These guys are going to get fucking barbecued in court, and they deserve it. There is a reason we are going all out on the raids across multiple jurisdictions. That reason is at least 150 million dollars laundered, countless millions in bribes, extortion of host countries, and 1200 dead in Qatar. That's not a typo, that's one thousand, two hundred people, which is the current death toll for FIFA construction. People will keep dying as long as construction continues. Qatar is taking desperate immigrant workers and putting them through such harsh treatment that they literally die. Their passports and such are confiscated and they barely get paid, so they have no escape. Why? Because FIFA let Qatar bride them into getting to host the cup. Why so much bullshit in Rio? Because FIFA is extortionist as all get out. This is just getting started. The Justice Department has been investogating FIFA for years.

Apparently there are rumours of UEFA (the European federation) boycotting FIFA president election if it's not postponed, multiple arrests and searches in the US, and Switzerland refusing exit visas to anyone working for FIFA... And this is all just over what they did in Americas... What would happen if the investigation uncovers any hard evidence of corruption in the bidding for the World Cups themselves... Well.. One can hope.

Now, if only someone had some nerve to do the same thing to IOC...

I'm glad they were finally caught. It seemed fairly obvious that things were not on the level, and that $ was changing hands; same with the Olympics. I hope they bust the Olympic Committee next, and that the US boycotts them if they're held in someplace like Russia again.

What's funny with the Olympics is how many places don't want to host them; Boston had a bid in, and only about 34% of the people there support it; most see it for what it is; a disaster of traffic and inconvenience; a gold-rush that leaves behind a lot of useless buildings; a boom and bust economic headache.

Get 2018 & 2022 out of Russia and Qatar, do something about Blatter and then I'll pop open the champagne.

Maybe they can strip Qatar of it's world cup hosting privilege.

Quite. Did anyone actually think that international football is not corrupt? Personally I have little interest in watching grown men kick an inflated pig's bladder around a field (well, maybe some interest in watching the men, but that's another matter), but it has been clear to one and all that FIFA is as corrupt as a corrupt thing.

I see Blatter is trying to brazen it out. No surprise there, either.

Seems that Visa is threatening to "re-assess" its sponsorship deal with FIFA.

Fifa arrests: Visa threatens to withdraw sponsorship as pressure increases | City A.M.

According to quotes at the link, most other sponsors responded with a stream of anodyne buzzwords... So far. But between this and Nike apparently being investigated they might start dropping their support too.

I really wonder how EA would square that circle though, for most other companies FIFA deals are mostly a nice extra, but for them good relations with big sports federations in general and FIFA in particular are major sources of cash...

So it seems that Blatter would be re-elected as the prince Ali withdrew his candidature after the 1st round (where neither got 75% majority required.)

Or, in other words, bye-bye any chance of this mess being resolved without something really drastic, like even more arrests or a major boycott.

Yeah, Blatter twisted everything in his favour in the most shameless way. He said this is "proof how his efforts against corruption work". Wtf?? That's like Putin saying that the protests against him are an example of "free speech".

Maybe those people should get the hint once in a while...

I think both of those World Cups definitely need taken back. I'd like to see China or Japan get 2018 and the USA get 2022.

About Blatter, I'm glad to see he is stepping down, but it would have been much better if he did that before the election.
