Quite a brilliant move for gay people actually!

Nobody likes being told they can't do something, so I'm fairly sure the heterosexual residents of the counties who want to get married will soon be rallying against those withholding licences.

Plus in the meantime (for this will only ever be a briefly lifespanned measure) it gives the wider public the oppurtunity to live life in the shoes of their fellow (gay) citizen. Feeling what it is like to face challenges to something as simple as getting marriage. It might act to instill a bit of empathy.

I'd point out I'm definitely not an "eye for an eye" or "two wrongs make a right" subscriber - but I think this case is different as this will only ever be temporary, and there will be no major harm done by heterosexual people facing a couple of weeks inconvenience here.

It's a nice little learning lesson for everybody, plus will inevitably backfire on those in power which will be a joy to watch.

    Go say sorry.

Thank lord it's not a county near myself.

And for those counties who aren't marrying anyone; well there goes their reputation and business.

I think angry businesses are the least of their worries, just think of all those angry bridezillas being told they can't have their big day!

Have they never seen what happens on Don't Tell The Bride when brides don't get what they want!

I was waiting for states to start doing crap like this. But since hetero couples aren't getting married either... I think there will be some protests

Actually, they can't do that. The Obergefell decision invoked not just the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendement, but the Due Process Clause as well. Marriage is a fundamental right, not just that LGBT people enjoy, but that everyone enjoys. They simply cannot deny the licenses.

This is almost as dumb as the homophobes on Twitter. "I'm moving to Canada". Yet they're too dumb to realize that SSM has been legal for 10 years in Canada.

Most of these politicians are just committing career suicide, really I'm not too worried abot all the road blocks they're trying to set up.

Alabama state's law says that county clerks and probate judges may issue marriage licenses. Hopefully a federal court will intervene, and on a more important note, hopefully Roy Moore will be removed from the bench again. Eventually they'll drop the act, just as they did when the military got called in to integrate their schools, and eventually they gave up and gave marriage licenses to interracial couples.

It won't be just the bridzillas in those counties that will be angry. It will also be all the businesses the make money off of weddings that will lose money to other areas.

Don't they realize this is just gonna bounce back on them. Why do they even bother, it can't honestly be THAT important. I can't even grasp why someone would be so butthurt about gay people getting the same rights as them. It's not even about religion. A lot, if not most lgbt are not religious and just want to be able to marry to have the same legal rights blah blah blah as other people do. WHY IS IT SUCH A HUGE PROBLEM!

They actually can't do that. In Obergefell, The SCOTUS ruled that same sex marriage is a constitutional right because of not only the equal protection clause, but also the due process clause. The last part also affirms that straight couples also have the constitutional right to marry under this ruling, and that it's unconstitutional for a county to go out of the marriage business and not leave something as a substitute for ALL couples to use to receive their marriage license.
