This is so stupid, it's disgusting. It's so disgusting it's funny. It's so funny, it passes straight back out of that, and is just stupid again. What the hell is this guy's problem?

There's a reason why Dan Savage coined the word "santorum" and popularized a disgusting definition for it. Rick Santorum just continues to live up to that definition.

I only follow American politics from a European perspective, so I don't speak with any great authority, but when I read or hear these comments they are always from Republican candidates. It must surely sicken moderate conservative voters in the US, who might otherwise lean towards the Republican Party, when so many of their candidates spout this sort of crap? Seems to me that there is very serious credibility problem on the right of US politics.

If you are a moderate conservative in the United States, how does it make you feel to hear all of this?

I will never stop being completely baffled as to why, WHY someone would even give a fuck about someone else's sexuality. WHY, WHY, WHY is it so important? WHY DO YOU EVEN GIVE A SHIT. ARE YOU INSECURE? PLEASE TELL ME BECAUSE I SIMPLY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHYYY!

I used to think that was a bit harsh of Dan Savage. Now I'm not so sure.

I think the problem is American politics* is very much cemented as a two-party race. Come election day its Red or Blue, it is "black and white". As such the parties have become clear opposites with little room for middle ground.

And with states often voting so consistently as to be labelled "Red States" and "Blue States" it really isn't desirable for parties to position policies towards middle-ground swing voters, in fact, it may work against them. Its almost a pressure for parties to "stick to what they know". The democrats know that appearing as progressive and liberal works for them, the Republicans know that preaching of "American values" and "good ol' patriotism" works for them.

*Now of course I'm referring to Presidential elections here, but I don't think there is any denying that presidential elections are the "biggie", the president holds a lot of sway and even in situations like we have at present (with a Repub. House and Senate) America I feel the President's party "trumps" that in giving the impression of Democrat "rule".

I am not a conservative, but I have to think that it is a huge struggle for many.

Indeed, Susan Eisenhower (granddaughter of President Eisenhower) left the Republican party--party of her grandfather--several years ago. I don't know her present status, but about that time she wrote a piece talking about this. One quote, then a link to the piece:

Reflections on Leaving the Party | The National Interest

I suspect she might not the be only defector.

As for myself, at one time I considered myself to "independent." But that has faded because of how batshit crazy the Republicans seem to have become. The ones running for office whom I could vote for are probably a lot better than Santorum, but I seldom feel comfortable voting for any. A part of me is uncomfortable, because I think it is healthier if we have two functioning parties in competition. Actually, I think we'd be healthier with more than two, but let's just start with two. But...when one party has gone so far off the rails, well, what choice do I have?

Rick in particular needs to be more concerned about global warming.

If it gets too hot, he's not gonna be able to wear those sweater-vests. What then, huh?

Guy just isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

I love the republicans like Santorum are still insisting that marriage is solely based on having children. They are stupid and should know full well that argument is no longer credible.

Even the GOP has got to be facepalming at this transparent act of sabotage. He is doing no one any favors except making otherwise complete idiots look good.

Not really; Rick Santorum is just another idiot in the stupid party. Among Ben Carson, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, Lindsey Graham, Scott Walker, and Donald Trump, this stupidity is standard fair.

As much as I agree that all of them are lamentable people, the Reps have no monopoly on stupid. The Democrats are every bit as guilty on the large scale, and are only wrong about different things. And honestly it might be off-topic, but I don't think Donald Trump in particular is an idiot. Scumbag? Absolutely, but you don't succeed as he has (outside of politics) without considerable cunning. Santorum strikes me as well-intentioned but completely clueless instead of manipulative.
