So this was on the front page of youtube:

On one hand it doesn't surprise me, but on the other it is shocking and appalling seeing the level of abuse gay people can expect to receive in Russia, and how ubiquitous it is.

It does seem like societal attitudes towards gay people in Russia are akin to the 1960s-80s in "Western" countries. Hopefully with social media and the internet it won't take them 30-50 years to catch up though, although with the sort of politics they have to endure perhaps it might.

Recently things have gotten much worse, I remember something like ten years ago it was not an uncommon sight to see gay or lesbian couples in the metro (but never on the street) discreetly holding hands or something like that. Most people didn't reach in any way, they just didn't care.

Today, the situation has gotten worse because of the new highly conservative and anti-gay movements in the political elite of Russia. My opinion is that these conservatives are intentionally creating conflict as a way to artificially pump up the "Russia vs. The West" attitude, which is fairly common among the masses. The politicians there desperately need this in order to show that their country is somehow unique and "better" than what's beyond their borders. It's all just a farce; they're using the gays as a punching bag.

Indeed, it's a populist ploy to detract from some really serious issues.

You're absolotley right pink panther. It even said that in 2005 more people supported gay rights then they do now. Russia is moving backwards on lgbt rights.

They also did this social experiment in Ukraine. Generally, the reactions of the people were great but there is this one istance where they encountered a group of Neo-Nazi. The group of guys actually teamed up to punch and kick the couple. It was brutal and hard to watch. What the hell is up with Eastern Europe??

This is a really great video to show the difference between societies in the world. It makes me really happy and appreciative to live in California and the US.
