    UNITED NATIONS

U.S. Refuses to Sign Measure On Decriminalization for Gays

Alone among major Western nations, the United States has refused to sign a declaration presented Thursday at the United Nations calling for worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality.

In all, 66 of the U.N.'s 192 member countries signed the nonbinding declaration -- which backers called a historic step to push the General Assembly to deal more forthrightly with anti-gay discrimination. More than 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality, and in several of those nations, homosexual acts can be punished by execution.

Co-sponsored by France and the Netherlands, the declaration was signed by all 27 European Union members, as well as Japan, Australia, Mexico and three dozen other countries. There was broad opposition from Muslim nations, and the United States refused to sign, indicating that some parts of the declaration raised legal questions that needed further review.

Maybe Obama'll do it in January. After all, after picking Rick Warren he's got A LOT of making up to do, I think.

OMG! I HEART FRANCE AND NETHERLANDS!
Thankfully im from the Netherlands haha, and to me this is bitter sweet. I never would have thought that many countries would jump on board! The US not doing it dosnt surprise me, they need a kick in the pants. Japan though? Didnt guess that one! Mad love for the Japan!

As long as they just keep pushing it it will go from 66 to everyone! ...with time

Funny how we're supposed to be such a progressive country, yet we're at the
bottom of the crap heap where civil rights are concerned.
I guess all we can do is wait and see what Obama does. This sucks!

I'm not surprised: Bush is still in office, and he, along with his cabinet/political appointee's, obviously still think homosexuality is "wrong" or is a "deviant lifestyle." What a lame excuse though: what was it? "needed further legal review" or some BS like that? How typical. I can't wait for that a-hole to leave the White House

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised that Mexico signed it.
In the last two years, I made myself think that very mexican was homophobic, when that, of course, isn't the case. I wish I opened my eyes earlier.

    That's no surprise...

(I'm trying to find the list of countries that signed it without success. I want to see what Uruguay did)

Great job AMERICA. Once again you've proven to me my countrymen are good folks.

  12. Really though guys it's really not a shock at all. It's most likely not even that we're anti gay but it's probably the same reason we won't legalize gay marriage on a federal level. They're thinking, "Well, it's not our place to force others to decriminalize it if they don't want to." Same thing with federal legalization. They're trying to act tolerant to state rights and saying well we can't make states accept homosexuality if they don't want to.

While I would like to shout and yell...
    The UN is useless.

Notice the nonbinding bit? And how not everyone has to sign? And how, essentially, this type of declaration, just like Kyoto or protection rights for native peoples, is useless.
Not even half of the countries signed it and those who did don't have to uphold it. It was dumb of the States not to sign it, considering homosexuality is not a crime. Perhaps the legalities of the paper outlined don't work in the US legal system.

My point: If I had balls, the UN should suck 'em.

I would like to think there's more to this than at first glance.

    Maybe I'm too hopeful.

How could the US possibly not be in favor of decriminalizing homosexuality worldwide? Seriously?

Have a look at UN resolutions (you can at UN's website, www.un.org). As of lately, and not so lately, the USA have voted against most attempts to introduce human rights resolutions, for example, prohibiting torture and things like that. So that is no surprise.
