A woman and her son were simply going up an escalator when suddenly, upon reaching the top, the floor collapses on them. The woman pushes her son to safety, but unfortunately, she falls into the pit and is crushed to death by the escalators gears.
Very depressing, I felt like crying upon hearing about it.
My condolences to the family. :frowning2:

I never use these things and it would take a lot for me to get on one. They scare the hell out of me and I avoid them at all costs. Now this scares me anymore.

how does this even happen? I've heard of people being scared of escalators but I've never understood why, I always thought they were fun. This is fucked up

Well, there are a ton of machineries and gears on constant motion, powered to move a ton of people, and I mean a ton, because a lot of people can fit on that escalator at once. Imagine being pulled into one of them on the underside where the gears spins. It is like being pulled into a factory conveyor belt.

Horrifying. Also, I noticed there are no emergency stop button anywhere on that escalator.

Edit: apparently there were an emergency stop button but none of the other women thought to push it. https://www.hongkongfp.com/2015/07/...or-in-china-could-have-been-prevented-report/

Edit2: There is the full, uncut video of the incident in that link. You have been warned. Mercifully, security camera recording does not include sounds.
It seems like all of the other women had no training on escalators and did not know what to do in such a situation. It is apparent on how dumbfounded they are and was almost completely unable to act.

Ok... let me try to understand this...

Instead of stopping the machine in the first place they place staff to warn people, not at the bottom to prevent people from using it, no, at the top of the machine, to warn people on it that the escalator may be loose at the top or malfunctioning since it had been repaired recently... and they don't even train this staff to know where the emergency buttons are?!

The amount of carelessness and/or ignorance of the people in charge enrages me. This could have been prevented at so many levels, what the hell is going on through these people's minds? And why were they recording it too? In case something happened?

... unbelievable. My sincere condolences to her family and loved ones...
I often try to avoid machinery to get to higher floors, even more so after this.

After this, and that earthquake incident, I'm starting to think Chinese mothers are some of the bravest and most dedicated in the world.

I was a little confused about what happened but I decided not to watch this video. It sounds like a horrific way to die, especially in what should be a safe environment. If her death was preventable, then that makes it especially tragic.

    Unfortunately quite typical to China.

Ok so I saw the video and I prefer not to imagine what happened to her. Luckily though she was fast at reacting and so managed to save her child's life. What I don't understand is why the two women didn't do more to try and save her as well. In Sweden we have big emergency stop buttons on the escalators both top and bottom. Sometimes there's also a few E-stops along the actual escalator.

While this is horrible, I don't think being afraid of escalators is really rational considering these deaths are incredibly rare. The risk of dying from choking on food is probably thousandfold greater. I would also imagine the few deaths that happen on escalators don't actually involve being caught in the machinery, rather falling down the actual steps just like one could slip and fall down a regular staircase.

I'm no lawyer, but I sincerely hope that:
    The mall gets shot down.
The two dumbasses (for lack of a better, more fitting term) should face negligence or murder charges.
The mall should be sued for everything it's got for negligence and murder.
Either way, someone's gotta end up in prison.
This saddens me to no end.
I mean, all they were doing was going up an escaltor, completely unaware that the mother was heading to their death.
And then the way she died.

I hope this haunts whoever was responsible for the rest of their lives.

Well I know you don't mean it that way but when you got balance and coordination disability problems escalators are a lot more scary and nerve-racking. If someone is behind me i feel more secure but still it scares the hell out of me because the fear of something i cannot help. But that is why there are elevators at the other way end of the store lol.

China, where elevators and escalators kill people.

At least the mom died a heroine.

Sorry, I've seen so many of these videos that I am numb to it.

I finally feel justified in my fear of escalators.
