"The endearing droid that had thumbed its way across Germany, vacationed in the Netherlands and made the improbable 3,600-mile trek across Canada without incident survived just over two weeks and 300 miles in the United States. On Saturday, its creators announced that hitchBot had been vandalized beyond repair and abandoned on a street in Philadelphia."

    More here.

I've spent some time in Philly, the "city of brotherly love" it wasn't. I think the problem was the robots appearance. In order for a robot to hitchhike safely through Philly, you need to look like this:

This is America. Why is there any expectation that we respect things others create?

Philly can be a pretty rough town, but I doubt he would have fared much better in small-town America, either; some-redneck probably would have shot him, thinking it was a government plot, those gun-loving, paranoid libertarian sorts. So I think it would have ended pretty quick, either way, city or country.

In Baltimore, he'd be sold for scrap metal, people are that poor here.

Now we know where the first site of the robot uprising will be.

Part of me is saddened by the vandalism and that it couldn't travel across the USA.

But then part of me finds the whole thing incredibly pretentious and vapid and thinks that you can't just expect to leave stuff about in public and expect it not to be stolen or damaged. This is the real world and it houses many terrible people.

I'm guessing these people were somehow involved.

Philly is rapidly becoming the place where experimental and fun art goes to die. Ever hear of the World's Largest Rubber Duck? The 60 foot tall, happy looking rubber duck ended up destroyed in Philly during the Tall Ships Festival at the end of June. Granted, it wasn't vandalism, but the duck had also toured the world and died in Philly. 4 days of a disappointing duck and other issues at the Tall Ships festival | NJ.com

I actually don't think this suggests the USA is more violent than other countries. I'm surprised the robot lasted as long as it did... though it was rather loveable in its own way.

If that were true, I'd probably be a bit more forgiving about it. Can't expect much from them.
