From a NY Times obituary about Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey who died at the age of 101. She single-handedly kept a dangerous drug with questionable data from being approved for use in the U.S. She didn't back down with pressure from the drug companies and helped bring in rules to keep drug companies from peddling harmful chemicals to the public.

We're not completely safe, though, as recent history with drug companies has shown, but we're a lot safer because of what she did more than 50 years ago.

If you want to see a little bit of a documentary that includes her story, watch from the 37:45 minute mark until 43:00:

All three episodes of this documentary are well worth watching btw.
