Target has always had a long history of being LGBT-friendly. So in a way I'm not surprised that they've decided to throw aside strict gender expression. Hopefully this will lead other companies to do the same.

Excellent. Companies always have a role to play in social change, so I'm glad to see Target taking its ethical responsibilities seriously.

Two years ago, Target also changed its policies regarding the supply of goods from questionable industries linked with child labour after pressure. Target's actions have generally been somewhat positive, so I think it's important we continually pressure it and other companies to be mindful of the social consequences of their policies.

A supermarket not separating child's toys by hideously distinct shades of pink and blue? Impossible!

    Neat

I'd love to see what happens if this ever spread and most places didn't distinguish between genders.

I wonder how the demographic would change. Would more boys and girls cross the traditional gender gap, or would it all balance out to be fairly the same?

That'd be a great look into how much nature and nurture play into male and female behavior.

Good question. I don't know. I know from my own experience, I have four younger sisters. They're pretty traditionally feminine but at the same time they all enjoy playing with stuff that's usually marketed towards boys (comic books, action figures, dinosaurs, superheroes, etc). I think, for the most part, it would depend a lot on what a kid's raised around and who their peer group is. I mean, a lot of kids do kind of veer away from gender neutral stuff when they get to school and they're around others kids who sort of influence how a kid views the proper way to express their genders but at the same time, if kids aren't really pressured into gender roles, do we have that anyway?

Lol xD I have no idea what these 'female legos' look like, I'm actually going to google that now.

Hopefully this extends past the kids' stuff to the adult clothes too though. Either way, it's a huge and awesome step forward; go Target! This might even make shopping for the clothes I want a bit less awkward or noticeable in the future...

Good. Gender roles are stupid anyway.

Yes, thank you Target! I've always felt weird going to the "girl's" aisle to look at stuffed animals, or the "boy's" aisle to get Pokemon cards (what? They're classic).

Hooray for Target realizing that toys are unnecessarily gendered and that it is messed up! :eusa_danc

It should also save them cost in the long run due to not having to organize and separate things to more sections of functionally similar stuff.

That said, I heard Target isn't doing so well recently.

Now if only they'd make TMNT and MLP comforters and sleeping bags in larger sizes!

The adult bedding section is SO boring

In many ways this is a nice step, but were signs really keeping people out of these areas? I mean, even if the signs are removed, many folks are going to still see some toys/clothes/accessories as more appropriate for one gender or the other.

Target is one of the stores that isn't too close to me. The closest one is a good 45 minutes away.

Does the Southern States feed and grain store have separate boys and girls sections? =p

Somehow, I picture you living in a little shot-gun shack, way up on a mountain. But a nice shack, mind you. Nothing shabby! And no stores nearby, 'cept for the general store, the post office, and the feed store.

Lego "Friends" I believe. It's all girls, there's pink and purple blocks, and all they do is have fancy houses and pool parties. I'm sorry, I guess I'm too female to be out saving lives or having adventures like the ones marketed to boys.
I always played with regular Legos in daycare. I didn't need fancy 'girl' colors to draw me in.
Same with nerf "rebel" guns. If a girl wants a nerf gun (played with these too btw) she'll use it anyways. Why the uneccesary gendering?
