Eh, I'd rather not touch this with a 20 foot pole.

In before "judging people for their gender/sexuality is wrong, unless I don't like them, in which case it's totally fine to judge and belittle their identity because they must be faking. I know them better than they do and I think they're lying so it must be so". Seriously, guys.

If a 22-year-old signed up here and created a thread saying "I came out as genderqueer and everyone's telling me that I'm faking it for attention and I don't seem genderqueer to them", I'd like to think that the general opinion from ECers would be "those people are jerks and your gender is legitimate".

Famous people don't give up their basic humanity or identity. They don't suddenly turn into an emotionless punching bag for the public. Respecting someone's gender is common human decency. Refusing to respect someone's gender, even if it happens to be a famous person whose public persona you don't like, isn't "edgy". It's a dick move. Period.

It is certainly within the realm of possibility that the statement was made for publicity or shock value. Pop culture does tend to inspire people to grab for attention. In which case genderqueer is being taken out of context.

However it is also within the realm of possibility that it is in fact true. Gender has become a very central part of identity in our culture. It is downright unfair to deny a person's gender expression. The truth of the matter is, unless evidence shows otherwise (and I don't have any clue what evidence could) the only decent thing to do is accept it at face value.

Either way though, it puts the term out there. I for one would be very happy if more people educated themselves outside of the binary. Even if it turned out to be some horribly offensive publicity stunt (I don't think it is) her name is so big that she is still putting the vocabulary out there. I cannot stress how important that is. I can remember how freeing it was for me when I discovered that I don't have to be binary. I really dont think I have the words to describe how powerful that feeling was.

edit: I do take issue with the title of the article, as well as writing in general. People really do need to stop tying gender with sexuality.

I agree with all of this. It is perfectly said and it matches my thoughts exactly.

Unfortunately, this story is old news. It came out (no pun intended) back in May. The article itself is dated May 5, 2015. There was even a thread on it here.

Can you imagine being a celebrity and having an even harder time being taken seriously because of it? Honestly I feel bad for them. Additionally, struggling with something like gender identity could explain a lot about Miley's behavior in the past. I for one am not going to assume *anything* one way or another. Just because Miley is famous does not make them less human.

Interesting, but I wonder what her best friend, the wrecking ball's sexuality is. (Yeah, I know it's a stupid thing to ask, it's supposed to be, shut up.)

    What I meant was...

Out of all the genderqueers I know, none of them show their boobs off like she has done.

Sorry if you took this the wrong way. I'm already having the worst day.

I have an issue with the article title, but otherwise, no, not really.

Showing off your body, or what you choose to do to your body, isn't something you should factor in when considering others' gender identities. I'd love to wear a flower crown and prance around in a pretty white dress, but it doesn't make me any less of a man, and if anybody tries to say otherwise, that would severely piss me off. Similarly, if Miley wants to show off tits, it doesn't matter. All that shows is that they're comfortable with their body, which is always a good thing.

That's just my two cents anyway.

Not every genderqueer person is the same just like how not every woman is the same and not every man is the same.

    I completely agree.

I'm sorry you are having a bad day. :frowning2:

That doesn't change the fact that what you said was problematic. We did not take it the "wrong way." We did not have a failure of interpreting you. What happened was you said a problematic thing.

Okay, so I seem to have more words on this than I thought.

I think it's really awesome that Miley has decided to come out as non-binary. First of all, we're finally getting some BIG representation! Second, it's possible that she may have had a little more courage to come out after Caitlyn Jenner came out, since both are huge in the media. If this is true, then that renders any attacks on Caitlyn useless.

And looking back, I think I may have caught myself asking if Cyrus was non-binary, at least subconsciously. Still pretty cool, IMO. Miley's rocked my book, and that even surprises me.

EDIT: Okay, saw Aldrick's post. I guess Jenner had nothing to do with it. Oh well, still awesome.

:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Just a reminder that gender expression is separate from gender identity. And of course, there's nothing wrong with loving and showing off your body, no matter what you identify as

Great that she's come out, I'm a little suspicious it may just for publicity but I'm not going to say it's not true either.
Personally I dislike Miley Cyrus. So the fact that she has come out isn't great news because I don't particularly want to be represented by her. Also public attitude towards her is generally negative so I'm worried people may associate their negative feelings towards her with non-binary people.

This is identity policing (telling somebody how they should/should not express their gender identity) and is very problematic. Having a bad day is not an excuse to be rude.
