Lots of panic and horror going on, and wild speculations are being thrown around. So far 22 people died from the first bomb, which went off right next to a hindu shrine in middle of town where there were many tourists. The second bomb went off near a busy pier, apparently thrown, but fortunately, it fell into water and did no harm.

"This is the worst incident that has ever happened in Thailand,” Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters at Bangkok's Government House on Tuesday, according to the Agence France-Presse news service. "There have been minor bombs or just noise, but this time they aim for innocent lives. They want to destroy our economy, our tourism.”

The result was a scene of unimaginable horror, said Marko Cunningham, a New Zealand paramedic who has worked in Thailand for 15 years and responded to an emergency call.

“I have never seen injuries like it,” he said. “These poor people had been shredded. There were so many holes in them that I didn’t know where to start trying to patch them up. The survivors were in a state of complete shock. We had to pull the bodies of the dead to reach those who were still alive. Their friends and loves ones had taken the full impact of the blast and that is what saved them.”
Mr Cunningham remembered how he prised the grasp of an injured young man from the fingers of his dead female companion. “You could tell that he knew she’d gone, but he just didn’t want to let go,” he said. “Whoever did this really wanted to kill and maim. I cannot imagine how full of warped twisted hatred they must have been.”
