Full Article - Ky. clerk jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses

I'm glad to see that she was arrested for contempt of court. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree, you disobey orders from the Supreme Court, your ass is going to jail. :eusa_clap(!)(&&&) Hopefully marriage licenses will be issued soon in Ashland. It amazes me that people use "religious freedom" to try and trump the law. "My religion requires me to have a private office and to have 20 minutes of facebook time a day". Try that one and see what people say..

Apparently, the Judge who ordered this said fines were not sufficient, as others would be paying them, and that she had an oath to uphold. He also mentioned that he himself was Roman Catholic, but that the law was the law, despite one's religious views, and that she, like anyone else in such a public capacity had to uphold the oath of office.

Also, it's kind of funny that she denied signing licenses for ANY couple, gay, staight or otherwise, and ordered all those under her also not to do so...going well beyond just her own beliefs.

    From Salon:

Davis said that she knew that same-sex marriage would become an issue when she was elected to take the place of her mother — who had held the office for nearly 40 years — last November. “I would have to either make a decision to stand or I would have to buckle down and leave,” she said. “And if I left, resigned or chose to retire, I would have no voice for God’s word.”

That’s why when the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, she issued an office edict barring any of the clerks from issuing any marriages at all, in an attempt to skirt charges that she was discriminating against same-sex couples.

According to the Kentucky Trial Court Review, the other clerks, including Cecil Watkins, didn’t support her in this decision, but were afraid to do so unless specifically order to by Judge Bunning. The Kentucky Trial Court Review’s Shannon Ragland wrote that Davis’ “conduct has terrorized not just her staff but everyone that works in the courthouse. And all for a foolish mission aided by out of state charlatan lawyers trying to raise money for their ‘religious liberty’ mission.”

It's too bad the gay activists weren't singing the hymn "Victory in Jesus" as she was being led away in handcuffs. I'm so happy they threw her ass in jail. The judge said exactly what was on my mind: a fine would be paid off by the religious right instantly. She needed to face real consequences.

And curiously enough, the judge was appointed by George W. Bush. It shows how far right the right continues to drift as they cry foul over this decision.

And theists will cry oppression, I'm sure. They need to get it through their heads that government laws are secular laws. We do not live in a theocracy (or aren't supposed to, anyway).

Unbelievable, odious, confused and downright false comparison to Jews in Nazi Germany, they are absolutely shameless for spewing this excrement.

Very good! My favourite twitter responses:

Also, it is very true the people pointing out that her supporters would be the first to kick off were a fundamentalist Muslim DMV worker to refuse a woman a driver's licence because of their religion. Clearly the "Freedom of Religion" lot and all the Senators tweeting "Religious Liberty" (like Ted Cruz and Huckabee) only believe a vision Christianity that suits them deserves special attention, not all religion.

Unfortunately ... this case is nothing but an example of how easy it is to polarize people. Talk about striking the ######'s nest.

No, she'll sit in jail until she agrees to do her job. I find it hilarious how this is an issue that people like her won't budge budge on, while even the Pope has overridden the Bible on certain issues, such as capital punishment.

Good, I hope that ends her news coverage, I'm sick of seeing her on my newsfeed.

Agreed! They need to give airtime to everyone who happily did their jobs regardless of their religious beliefs. Show the world that not every Christian in the USA is bat-shit crazy.

I saw this quote and thought it was great, "What would Conservatives have thought about a Quaker refusing to sell gun permits due to it violating her religious beliefs?"

    Whoever tweeted

The Bible teaches us that 'traditional marriage' is between one woman and as many different men as possible.

has got it backwards I think.

I'm wondering, is she still collecting the 80 grand a year while she's sitting in jail? If I was a resident of that county I'd be pushing for a recall election, assuming she isn't up for re election in November.
