I had a police officer come into school today to talk about this. I am so so so not doing that. I mean, I want to be a teacher. And a criminal record relating to sexual stuff / child-related stuff means that you can not ever get a job with children, under any circumstances, in England.

These laws are so vague and poorly thought out, and result in the most ridiculous of circumstances.

I couldn't agree more. They should be more clear and precise, maybe only then would teens stop acting like idiots.

I just find it absurd that a 17 year old can be prosecuted for sexually exploiting themselves.. it's idiocy of the highest order.

I see why there are laws against this and how it's not good for young people to take nudes...but seriously, I think they went too far on calling him a sex offender for HIS own photos.

Too bad that prosecutor probably won't be disbarred. Charging a child as an adult for making child pornography, when you think he's competent enough to be tried as an adult. Go figure!

How did they break the law? I'm confused! They were both minors when they sent each other nude photos. Now that they are of age those photos are viewed as sexually exploiting a minor? How stupid!

It's like arresting someone and putting them in jail for a crime they haven't committed but might commit in the future or another life.

An unbelievably stupid thing for both kids to do, but the police are equally stupid for the way they've handled this. By all means read both of them the riot act, but the charges themselves are nonsensical at best.

By this logic... when I smoke a cigarette, I should be arrested for attempting suicide.

I think the real lesson here is, quit sending stuff to people. Especially electronically, because that stuff can so easily be exploited.

Maybe they like it vague, that way they can twist and turn the law to their convenience without anyone being able to tell them they are 100% wrong.

I mean, clearly there was some ulterior motive here, since they have not disclosed how they (the police) got the pictures in the first place. Me thinks maybe the parents are going too far trying to teach their kid a lesson, or something among those lines.

nothing like 'making your child a sex offender' for teaching them a lesson about sending pics of themselves. Probably the most fool-proof plan in history.

    Duuuh. That's, like, Parenting101.

In all seriousness, it could also be the parents of the other teen involved trying to ruin this kid's life for corrupting their kid, or something. What I'm definitely sure of is that the pictures came from either one of the teens involved or their respective parents. If anyone else had come to the police with the pictures, they would be charging that person instead for possession of child pornography.

I'm afraid this prosecution just about sums up the law in my country at the moment.

The police went hammer & tongs to convict this kid yet conveniently misplaced the VIP paedophile case papers that would have shamed many past and present political heavyweights, as well as other "high standing" people.

"The law is a ass, a idiot" comes to mind.

Wow, this is like the one non-LGBT article I've ever seen to not divide this community in some way, lol.

The law considers him to be a child when being photographed, but an adult when taking or sending it. By that reasoning, everyone under the age of consent commits child molestation whenever they masturbate. This just goes to show how stupid some American laws are, and how unjust it can be to automatically charge someone who broke the letter of the law.

As an example of how far this kind of stupidity can go in America, I've heard that there was a case in Washington in which a woman was raped, but she was charged with statutory rape because the guy who raped her was underage. I wish I remembered the name of that case.
