    That was fast.

Somehow, I don't think the Vatican is going to soften up on the issue of homosexuality any time soon.

Well, he sounds like a very intelligent person; hopefully he can get a job lecturing at a University, and not have to contend with the pressures of hiding his life away in some archaic office from which they used to conduct The Inquisition, of all things!

    ^^^^ yup

As much as it's a natural conclusion to think he's being fired for being into other guys, he probably would have been fired if his secret partner was a woman. Being celibate is part of the job description for RC priests...

All that said, it's good that another un-straight person finally found his way and is living who he is.

    1 Timothy 4:1-5

"But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer."

I think that is right. It's not so much his being gay, but his breaking his vow of chastity in such a public way. A priest who gave a press conference with his girl friend would get the push too.

This monsignor is an academic and will probably have no problem getting a university job. I worry more for closeted priests (and the catholic Church would collapse without them) who have no security and have to play a game.

I think they need to ditch the whole celibacy thing; it's horrid and unnatural, in my mind. To each their own, but to have this system that makes sex look dirty, and not appropriate for those in sacred/holy positions is harmful, in my opinion.

I'm going to start a religion where the priests and nuns have to take a vow of having sex, or at least masturbating; this would be more in parallel with nature, and cause less guilt in the world.

It is completely unnatural. It was only added in to protect the growing wealth of the church.

And of course weird shame about sex keeps the peasants in line.

Good points, there. Maybe one day, the vow will be optional; I think when you have all these priests with all this dammed up sexual energy, then dress up pubescent boys in dresses at an age where they look somewhat androgynous, you're asking for problems. I mean, what were they thinking? Not that this excuses any of the abuse scandals, but this whole system is a recipe for disaster.

Hmm. The whole sexual abuse thing has been dreadful, but I don't think you can put it down to celibacy. While the Catholic Church has interested the media most (because the media love a Catholic sex scandal) there is no evidence sexual abuse is more common among Catholic clergy than Protestant clergy. And clerical abuse is at a much lower rate than by teachers, say.

We need to be really careful with the sexual abuse thing, because it is used to attack gay men. Often I think it is more to do with power than sexual frustration.

The Orthodox Church require their priests to be married, unless they are monks. Maybe that is more healthy. I don't know.

While celibacy is a pointless backwards rule remember this is religion we're talking about, it was built on those. This guy had to know what he was getting into, don't think I feel too bad about this.

He was born in Poland in 1972. He thus grew up in a country which was both deeply Catholic and Communist. He was ordained age 25. Did he really know what he was getting in to? I doubt it.

A lot of gay men have ended up in the priesthood because it was an honourable way of being unmarried in very conservative and homophobic societies.

These vows he took should have been very much ingrained into his head. Trust me, he knew. This is like saying you sign up for the military and are then not going to follow orders and kill enemy soldiers.

Despite our personal feelings on the subject, he definetely knew he violated two rules, as unjust as they are.

Yeah, he knew he was breaking the rules, breaking his vows. The question is, did he understand what he was getting into when he took those vows 20 years ago? Sure, they may have made sense then, and I am sure he really meant them. But he may not even have really understood his sexual feelings then. Would you really hold him to them now?

Ignoring sexuality I guarantee he knew about the celibacy vow.

Yes, of course he knew about it. But presumably he feels circumstances have changed. I wouldn't want to be held to every decision I made 20 years or more ago when I was in my 20s. We all make mistakes, wrong choices.

We are dealing with hypotheticals, really. But he may well have thought that, not being 'the marrying kind' it wouldn't matter. I guess he had no idea he would be sent to work in Rome and meet a man and fall in love. He probably assumed when he was ordained that he would be in a parish in Poland all his life.

    It's also unbiblical.
