Terminally ill California residents can now choose to end their suffering with a prescription from their physician. It took long enough. I was going to school in Oregon some 20 years ago when the voters there chose similar legislation for themselves. The Christian right proclaimed it would result in euthanasia of the elderly and infirm which never happened. In the years since then a relatively small number of people have elected to end their life this way.

    It's wonderful news.

Euthanasia is something that surprisngly many people know little about. People support it in general, but when asked about circumstances in which it is acceptable, the same people end up rejecting virtually all models in which to implement it. Many oppose it without knowing much about it.

No matter how one feels, it's really important that we have these discussions about death and dying. This talk addresses a lot of issues around euthanasia such as children with terminal illness and mental health's ability to conflict with patients' ability to make rational choices.
