My god, you see? Bigotry literally does cost the government! So much money down the tube because some men wanted to see more then just their own rifle

    Wheee!

In one of my classes shortly after the inauguration, the teacher asked everyone to write a short piece about what we hoped Obama would do while in office. Two of the things I put down were the repeals of DOMA and DADT. Not out to that teacher (or any of them) yet, curious to see how that turns out.

Well, I guess, in the process of 'getting elected' one has to project oneself (as far as possible) as being acceptable to as many people/groups/views as possible.

Now he has been elected with a very strong mandate, it appears he is making his directions and intentions known.

He's smart alright - and, I think, very worthy of the enthusiasm being shown by millions (billions) of people around the world.

Could Hillary or McCain have engendered such feelings of hope and promise for what is to come? - No, they couldn't.

Obama? Yes, he can  and he has. This could be a quite remarkable presidency.

Exactly. This is why it pisses me off when the military whines about low recruiting numbers. Like back when over 40 Arabic translators were fired because they are gay or lesbian. Then not too long after that there's a report on how not as many people are signed up. While I'm sure lack of support for the war has to do with the majority of lack of people signing up, bullcrap like DADT I'm sure makes it even worse. They have no reason to bitch about low numbers with something like that in effect.

The military needs all the competent and able servicemen and women they can get, sexual orientation be damned and I'm so glad our current president realizes this.

What does this mean and how this prevented before?

There are instances in many areas where, say gay people aren't allowed to visit their partner in the hospital, or make important decisions for them if their partner can't do it for themselves (like whether or not to take someone off life support). Or if someone's partner dies, there are questions of the will and money and/or belongings. Their marriage not being legally recognized can mean that they can't share things that belonged to their loved one with other relatives.

    Shoop da whoop.
If civil unions ACTUALLY equal marriage with all civil rights and junk, then they're fine by me. I don't need the word.
I doubt they'll be made actually the same though.
Looks good on paper, let's see what actually happens.

Wow, and to think that people were sick of Obama, this is why so much focus is put on him, he can actually accomplish most of the stuff he says he wants to

He hasn't actually accomplished anything yet. He's been in office one day.
This is just a list of stuff he'd LIKE to accomplish.

I voted for Obama. I was thinking we would do well with him.
Pardon me for being a little doubtful. With everything I've read on the subject,
all I can say is,I hope he does what he has said he will.
I realize it's been 1 day and there's a lot to be done.
I guess I'm someone who has to see it to believe it.
    I do have hope,though!
