Well, this is going to suck for a lot of people who use the Deep Web because their country has blocks on websites like Youtube and Wikipedia; because there's a good chance this will be abused if it ever happens.

Most of the Deep Web isn't even all that bad, and I thought the FBI didn't have that many problems shutting down the really bad shit like CP websites and red rooms.

Pretty interesting. Hopefully that's helpful to them in flushing out some of the unspeakable filth that dwells within those depths

Re: NASA, in conjunction with DARPA, will construct a search engine for the "Deep Web

The thread title says, "Deep Web," but the linked article says, "Dark Net" (a.k.a. "Dark Web"). These are very different things.

The "Deep Web" is whatever is on the Internet isn't accessible to search engines. This includes your emails, private social media accounts, and in general things that can only be viewed after logging in. Search engines generally work by reading a web page, and following whatever links are on that page. Your private messages on emptyclosets.com are part of the "Deep Web" because search engines can't access it. After all, Google doesn't know your EC password (or, hopefully it doesn't).

The "Dark Net" on the other hand is part of the Internet that isn't accessible without special software. The best known Dark Net is the Tor network, but it's not the only one. It makes it more difficult to determine the location of the end user by encrypting the network traffic and send it through a network of donated Tor routers that route them to other Tor router. This can make it really difficult to trace where the packets came from.

While networks such as Tor can make it easier for criminals to get away with criminal activity, there are very good reasons why it exists (which is why Uncle Sam heavily subsidizes it). It is often used by people who need security (the Tor browser can work well for an EC user who lives with their homophobic parents, but doesn't want their usage of EC to be visible to their parents). It's also used by activists and journalists who are in areas in which it isn't safe for their information to be traced back to them.

Yes, but I was referring to the deep web in general, and thus I suppose that the dark net is a subset of it. I believe that scholar.google.com is an example of deep web material.

In addition, youare probably aware that on can aces the dark web via "I2P" as well as from a standard browser, albeit with the assistance of a proxy such as "onion.city" or "tor2web.org." I recommend the latter.

Re: NASA, in conjunction with DARPA, will construct a search engine for the "Deep Web

    They're both the same thing.

The Deep Web is often referred to as an onion and stuff such as your accounts is basically the outer layer. The stuff that's referred to as the "dark web" is the more inner layers of the deep web and is only accessible with specific software due to the nature of how these servers work.

I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand it's filled with the absolute filth of the human population including black markets, pedophiles and people hosting live snuff porn and interactive murder videos. On the other hand, however, the technology itself was invented so that oppressed citizens can speak out against their government or for people to anonymously contact journalists with very little risk to their own identity and it is still used for that today. If you start peeling away the layers of the onion you compromise that safety.

Fair warning--those methods are not safe as traces of where you have been are stored inside the browser you're using the plugin for and can then be cross referenced with other information to pin down exactly what you have done.

Re: NASA, in conjunction with DARPA, will construct a search engine for the "Deep Web

I see it as a good piece of technology, that people just do bad things with sometimes. A lot of the Dark Web is good stuff. There are news sites that are free from censorship, and are updated faster. People use it for chatting when their countries block normal chatting websites. When people talk about "getting rid of" the Darknet, I could never agree. Child porn is not ok and it should be taken down wherever possible, but by taking down (not that it's possible) or making illegal services like this seems incredibly wrong, and it would validate the violation of so many people's rights worldwide.

In some ways, it does. It's not quite like google, but you can generally find what you're looking for through Torch or one of the many directories.
