Virginia county closes schools over reaction to Arabic assignment | www.wsoctv.com

At first glance my thought was, is there something in the water in that part of Virginia that is affecting peoples judgement? But then there's this:

The school district said they were closing schools after parents objected to the World Geography curriculum, which led to media coverage, which led to “phone calls and electronic mail” that raised concerns because of their “tone and content.”

The district’s statement said there was “no specific threat of harm to students” but they were closing downs schools “on the recommendations of law enforcement and the Augusta County School Board out of an abundance of caution.”

So my guess is someone opposing this overreacted and said some general threatening things.

I'm baffled that these are the same people who say "keep God in schools".

To be fair, as an agnostic, I'd be annoyed to have to copy religious text of any type, be it Muslim, Christian, or Jewish.

But there is no reason to make terrorist threats against the schools for it.

I totally agree with both points. I'm betting though there wouldn't have been the same outrage from the locals if it had been a quote from the Holy Bible.

Yeah, there probably wouldn't have been this level of outrage. Maybe an ACLU or Freedom from Religion Foundation lawsuit, but not a terrorist threat. Atheists and agnostics are usually classier than that. Lol

Given the climate of fear in the USA over recent happenings, it was a stupid assignment and the reaction was predictable. Common sense teachers. Use plain old common sense.

All I can say is my World Geography class didn't teach me this when I was growing up.

I mean I kind of get that some people have more fear or whatever, but it's just an assignment and I'm pretty sure the schools would not purposely make kids do an assignment for a negative cause.

An over-exaggeration is a complete understatement here.

Not surprised this is from the South. No offense to any Southerners here, but this doesn't shock me.

I've been in every gulf coast state, and also been, even if briefly, in every northern state on a line from Illinois to New York and New Jersey, including Penn. and Maryland. I've also been to Detroit. I've seen or heard of just as many ignorant people up north as down south.

Schools shouldn't be a ground for political, religious or such, harmful to the young mind, views. Copying the Arabic for "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messanger!" is pretty challenging idea, and I'm amazed that noone focusses on the teacher. He must be either retarded to not forsee such turn of events, or he must've achieved exactly what he wanted. Which kinda makes him an evil douche. Either way, they overreacted imo. Should've fired the teacher. That's all ~

Learning Arabic is awesome, but why did it have to be such a charged message? The assignment could have been to learn the language and write something of their choosing. Islam may be all but inextricable from Arabic, but one may understand that fact without having to express the belief as truth.

Well yeah, those places aren't the best places to go looking for highly enlightened people (no offense to anyone from there). For god's sakes, go to Vermont and New Hampshire. The people so north, that if Vermont became part of Canada, people would say "Well it's about damn time!"

Come to Oregon or Washington. We're (usually) very nice people. :icon_bigg

But man. It's like post-9/11 all over again, except the sad thing is, this mindset never really went away.

Which people would say it, the people in Vermont or Canada? If Vermont became part of Canada there might be a problem with the guns laws, since Vermont allegedly has almost none. Concealed carry is legal without any permit or training requirement, people can possess real assault rifles, belt fed machine guns and silencers (federal laws of course still apply) yet has one of the lowest violent crime rate in the entire country. It's why the gun control issue was a problem during the debates for Sanders versus Clinton and O Malley.
