Well, if it's a majority vote then maybe they won't have to wait too long for full marriage equality, at least I'd hope so. :eusa_clap

A step forward. But it's still a long way to go for Greece. Greece is much still a conservative country, I hope all the best for the LGBT community there.

Not necessarily. Recent polls actually show a large increase in acceptance for LGBT people and partnerships. The majority of people support marriage (but just not adoption). 70% for civil unions. 56% for marriage. 30% for adoption.

I hope so too, since I have read a lot of unpleasant comments from the Greeks this morning :icon_sad:

Huge step. Let's keep on going. It'll be steps forwards and steps backwards. The final balance will be positive.

Glad to see SYRIZA at least getting through some good social legislation like this. It might not be full marriage equality, but it's a step in the right direction.

I'll have to follow this development. Every step we take in exploiting that global economy and influencing others to become decent is a step in the right direction. The more countries that legalize what is effectively marraige, the more the other's feel peer pressured to do the same.

    This is nice to hear!

I've always wanted to see Greece, especially all those islands. And I hear Athens is among the most amazing cities in Europe. I imagine like many places, things are much more open in the big cities, and less so in the more rural regions.

Next, I'd like to see Italy at least recognize civil unions, as they seem to be lagging.

Oh, and also Germany: They seem to be really behind in passing gay marriage. (Austria, too)

As much as the Greek government's record of economic management is enough to inspire nightmares for the rest of Europe, I'm glad Syriza has pushed this through. Greek governments have for too long been unhealthily close to the Orthodox Church. Of course this isn't the only fight to be had in Greece for both secularisation and LGBT rights, but it's a nice step.

This may have effects far beyond Greece. While Orthodoxy is autocephalic, the Greek church is still "first among equals" in many regards, and while in the short term it would probably only strengthen its hostility, after a while they would have no choice but to at least stop the active opposition. And without this prodding from Greek bishops it very well might be that other Orthodox churches would be easier to persuade to change their minds.
