Something tells me those purification pitchers wouldn't have been much help in this instance.

I apologize if it's a morbid thing to ask but were you told what kind of ongoing effects your lead poisoning would have on you?

I'm in the process of chelation therapy now. My doctor said I probably have a slightly reduced iq score and might have excessive vision problems in the future, so there are some long term effects. That's all as of right now, but there could be more. I drink a lot of powdered drinks like Kool aid and stuff made from tap water, so I did take in a lot of the bad water.

Oh, and also they think I may have stunted development in a certain area of my brain I forgot the name of. It's the same part they say gets messed up by pot. It's a good thing the government is immune to the law, or they would probably get in trouble for this.

    Hippocampus, that's the one.

Rick Snyder and everyone else involved should be in prison.

My mom voted for him twice and she feels so guilty now. I actually feel bad for her, I think she feels like she's partially responsible for my lead poisoning because of it.

I'm surprised this is happening in a first world country.

Rick Snyder should be impeached over this farce. But alas, it won't happen. I have an aunt and a couple cousins that still live in Flint, and they're being billed over $100 a month for toxic, lead-filled water they can't use. It pains me to see the city I was born in, and worse, my beloved home state of Michigan being humiliated on an international basis like this. Snyder will be termed out two years from now and I've got a good feeling we're going to elect a governor who will actually do something about this situation.

This is appalling. A small financial emergency doesn't justify depriving people of access to clean, healthy water. It probably doesn't help at this stage, but the right to access clean water is a relatively new, but indisputable feature of international law.

And from the Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation:

"The rights to water and sanitation require that these are available, accessible, safe, acceptable and affordable for all without discrimination. These elements are clearly interrelated. While access to water may be guaranteed in theory, in reality, if it is too expensive, people do not have access... Having a tap which delivers unsafe water does not improve one’s access. Human rights demand a holistic understanding of access to water and sanitation."

I'm shocked that domestic law permits them to pump industrial sludge into people's water supply, because providing access to potable water is just about one of the most fundamental duties of governments.

Maybe another issue is the water from the Flint Rover being that filthy to begin with.. it might be time to clean it up.

It's so disgusting. We're essentially paying to have sewage running through our pipes. On top of that we have to pay for bottled water, just so we have access to water that isn't poison.

That damn Republican governor needs to hang for this; the death penalty isn't even enough for him.

As a Michigan native, it makes me sick, how humanity gets sold out for profit...but that's Republicans for you, profit over compassion.

I don't believe in solving problems with violence, but I certainly think he should be charged for this. People have died from this, and I personally have permanent brain damage from it. Government officials are always immune to the legl system and it's not fair.

That's not the issue. River water is more acidic than lake water, and you have to treat it a different way to prevent it from eating away the material that stops lead from leeching into the water. But that cost too much.

Not trying to make an argument here, just trying to understand. It appears to me that Detroit Water cut off Flint making them switch to the backup water from the Flint River. The City Manager, responsible for getting Flint out of bankruptcy, made the decision to not use the additive to treat the river water. That sounds like it is the fault of Detroit Water, and the City Manager, how is it Governor Snyder's responsibility?

The state of Michigan did this because of a budget shortfall, so essentially the leadership said "Hey Flint, to make up for our terrible budget proposals, we're taking away your clean water." While the Flint Manager is responsible for getting the city out of financial trouble, it's the state that is in charge of trying to reverse the budget deficit they have.

This is actually a very clear example of environmental racism, since Flint has a greater than 60% black population. I'd hope Snyder gets impeached because of this, but I doubt he will.
