UPDATE: OPD Chief ‘disappointed’ at sentence in illegal gun purchase | Local News - KETV Home

"If you care about gun violence, reducing gun violence, in the city of Omaha, or any other place in this country, you have to address the issue of straw purchasing," Omaha Police Officer's Association Vice President Anthony Conner said.

Straw purchasing, or buying a gun under false pretenses, for a felon, is a federal crime. Court documents said Johnson committed that crime, and Johnson said she just got a slap on the wrist.

"She could have gotten 10 years and a $250,000 fine. But she got nothing, probation, community service," Conner said

This kind of sentencing is more of a factor in gun crime in the U.S. than the lack of some new law that probably won't be taken seriously either. If I had been the judge, she would've gotten the max prison time possible, to send a message to others thinking about doing the same thing. In fact, she should've been charged as an accessory to the murder. For example, in the U.S. if you knowingly drive a getaway car for someone committing a robbery, and the robber murders someone, you can be charged as an accessory, even if you didn't know the person was going to shoot someone. You can even be charged if the robber or another accessory person doing the robbery is shot by the police or a civilian defending themselves. Common sense should tell you that you don't lie and circumvent the background check process to knowingly give a gun to a criminal. What do you expect a criminal to do with a gun?
