The fact that a several 'politicians' thought that this was a law in any way worth putting forward, let alone enacting, both baffles and disgusts me.
However, it's good to see that they're being shown that such brain-dead actions have consequences.

I read somewhere that there are proposals in about 20 states, and all of them are influenced by the asshat attorney that defended Kim Davis over the marriage license issue in Kentucky.

What is our country coming to?

In any other case laws protecting from "theoretical dangers that have never happened" would never pass. You don't see a nationwide ban on funding or building Martian landing sites do you?

This one passes, because of their own prejustice and bigotry. They just back it up with "a reason" because they know they don't have one. I guess they want to see their state go down the toilet too. :eusa_doh:

You mean "this is what happens when you don't vote in mid terms right"?

I would hate to see any states would choose to pass this horrible bill. This is very unfair for the transgender community and outrageous for them to think about this law at all.

Someone suggested it was a ploy by the government to get people jabbering over what's otherwise a morally transparent issue so they may do more damaging business in relative obscurity. I am inclined to believe it.

    Wouldn't surprise me.

The fact some people looked at the massive backlash at North Carolina's anti-LGBT law and thought "that good idea " is baffling to me. Even if I'm not surprised.
The fact so many are being proposed at once disgusts me.

I feel that this a safety in numbers thing. Companies can't boycott every state that passes a Bathroom Bill without taking a massive hit themselves.

I'd say that's in the right ball park.

Ultimately Republicans want LGBT people to have as difficult a life as possible, if not legislated out of public life completely. Easiest way to do that is to keep or make discrimination legal against LGBT individuals and families. Problem is no one likes discrimination and a majority are in favour of non discrimination protections for LGBT people.

So what do you do if you're a Republican? Simple, instead of saying that you want to keep discrimination legal because you find LGBT people icky, you frame it as a religious freedom issue and about wanting to protect Christians from being discriminated against by the government. A dog whistle in other words.

Bathroom bills are the same idea. Legalizing or codifying discrimination into law becomes an easier sell if you frame your bill as a law preventing men from entering women's bathrooms. Just look at all spin about HB2 from Gov McCrory, it's all about trans bathroom access and not a single word about the fact the bill excludes LGBT people from the non discrimination protections it creates and pre-empts anything passed at local level.

It's the latest dog whistle and if the defeat of HERO in Houston shows us anything, it's that it's brutally effective.

To be fair, Massachusetts is fighting a group called "mass resistance" at the state level right now. Some towns have city ordinances, but the whole state isn't there yet.
