Two stories from the world of sports. Chicago Blackhawks hockey player Andrew Shaw was caught calling a ref a faggot and was suspended and fined by the league. Meanwhile, former baseball pitcher and current ESPN broadcaster (and general idiot) Curt Schilling was fired after posting an extremely transphobic Facebook post and then responding to it by being even more of a hateful idiot. Good to see these organizations taking a stand, especially since the sports world has been behind the curve in this area

Im a big blackhawks fan and its very frustrating to have one of my favorite teams players be brought to the spotlight for this but it is what it is hopefully it brings its to the light and can start to facilitate change

At least some sports organizations take these things seriously!

A few less hateful people being broadcasted, hopefully this will make things easier for impressionable kids in the closet. Maybe the US government will catch up, but we all know how slow they are with civil rights issues.

Look, sport occurs in a professional context. Sportsmanship is why you don't do stuff like this when you're a player. When you're a commentator, you talk about the players, and the excitement of the game. Anything else is ancillary. Therefore, do not be surprised when unsportsmanlike behavior or unprofessional conduct is met with negative consequences.

It's specially egregious and hilariously stupid in Shaw's case because just this very month the Blackhawks partnered with You Can Play, an organization working against homophobia in sports. Hilarious! Just how dense do you have to be to fling those slurs mere weeks after your team vowed to condemn just that? Poor Shaw, I would check for concussions if I were him.

Maybe he is just a hardcore homophobic who doesn't like that and just want to get himself fired saying things he want. And well, he got it.

-Mommy, he said a bad word.
-Go to your room, son. You're grounded
Honestly, I find the whole Andrew Shaw situation comical :roflmao: I suggest athletes from now on, when they're angry, use the expletive "doo-doo head" instead. Properly expressing your emotions without slighting anyone, neat.
    Also, "sensitive training" sounds creepy...
No comment on the other case, don't know, don't care.

Nah, Shaw isn't getting fired, just suspended for a game and fined $5,000. Sounds like a fair punishment to me; enough of a deterrent to give him and others pause before flinging stupid slurs on the ice (sounds like it worked), but not unduly severe. While slurs are certainly awful, unlike Schilling, it's not like he was making a stand in favor of anti-LGBT legislations or anything of that caliber. Termination for yelling "faggot" a couple of times during a game once would have been too much. This way he can both serve as an example of what happens when you do that, but still gets a shot to learn from this and hopefully redeem himself in the future.

All in all, I'm happy with how both cases were handled, and hopeful that sports will keep getting more inclusive as time goes on.
