If you're a hero for beating up a drunk, then the definition of the word has indeed fallen far.

The only way to deal with fascism is to smash it. Anyone who does that is a hero in my book.

Yeah I don't know if I'd call him a hero; he was extremely violent to the guy who didn't put up much of a fight anyway.

Fighting in self-defense is one thing, but I don't know if I'm happy with using it to teach people lessons. I doubt it cured the guy's racism.

Yeah, I don't think you should solve your problems with violence, especially when it's unnecessary. I'm not defending the other side, as that was clear racism and harrasment and was incredibly wrong in its own right, but I certainly wouldn't call someone a hero for resorting to violence in retaliation to nonviolent jerks. I think they're both wrong.

That looked like an assault charge to me, especially when the legal system is already biased against black people ( unfortunately ). I don't think resorting to violence is the answer.

It's easy to be the moralizer when you're watching from afar. Real life is far more complicated than that.

He was a drunk. People do stupid things when they're drunk and this guy probably wasn't a fascist, but just wanted to pick a fight and decided to do it with the guy who looked the weakest in the entire train car--calling him the n-word was probably just the best way to rouse him in this drunkards head. At worst, the only thing he had to do was push the guy as he probably would've fallen over and had a hard time getting up since he was drunk. That reaction was way out of proportion.

It was a bout with a drunkard, not the civil rights movements of the 50's and 60's--there is nothing heroic going on here.

    ---------- Post added 23rd Apr 2016 at 12:00 AM ----------

I don't blame him for what he did--the guy probably still remembers the civil rights movement--but there's nothing heroic about it. It definitely wasn't the best reaction, but it was a very human reaction and I can't fault him for that.

Twitter, video, evidence, an old man beating a guy who offered little resistance.
Am I the only one who thinks this would have been better for the old man without posting a video on twitter?

I think the guy kind of had it coming. That said, I neither praise nor have critique for the victim (the colored man)'s actions. My ethics on this is kind of 'keep yourself in check and don't initiate anything harmful unto others, or be free from my mercy and pity.' He started it, he suffered the cost, and it was his fault. That's that in my opinion.

This is what I feel conversations between anti-fascists and liberals look like:

Bitch got what was coming to him. Don't know if I'd call the old guy a "hero", but I'm certainly not going to blame him for beating the ass of the racist. I don't care if the racist was drunk or not, that's no excuse to be an asshole.

He shouldn't have beat him, he should have ignored him. Now that racist man will go tell his racist friends that he has personal " proof" that black people really are violent.... I think the had good intentions, but that really wasn't the way to go.

This is shameful, from both sides. No one comes out looking good here.
