"Speaking at Bloomberg’s headquarters in London on Monday, Mr Jonathan appeared to majorly backtrack on the controversial legislation, commenting: “When it comes to equality, we must all have the same rights as Nigerian citizens. In the light of deepening debates for all Nigerians and other citizens of the world to be treated equally and without discrimination, and with the clear knowledge that the issue of sexual orientation is still evolving, the nation may at the appropriate time revisit the law.”For me as a Nigerian this is great news. It means hopefully all the homophobic lynching will come to an end.

While it won't fix past mistakes, it'd definitely be a step in the right direction. :icon_wink

Most of the anti-LGBT laws have their origins in the colonial past and I think it's time for Africa to really start moving forward on this issue. Whilst the continent has done much to shed itself of the shackles of history, they have (by choice) maintained these archaic and oppressive 19th century laws -- laws that the former rulers have themselves consigned to the dustbin. One would imagine that Africa would be glad to ditch another reminder of the colonial past, but not on this issue, it seems. Very sad!
