If you can't be open in the media then what confidence does that give people even to tell their parents

This is seriously wrong. Calling him a star.

    He's a swimmer!

But we are more graceful (speaking as a diver here, in case people didn't understand) :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

  8. I'm not surprised really. People aren't ready to deal with it clearly.

I think that America is as much in the dark ages as the rest of the world with respect to sportsmen/women coming out the closet. TV celebrities seem to have a form of immunity when it comes to homosexuality because they are entertaining. A gay comedian is twice as funny because he's gay, in many people's opinions. Thats the same where ever you are in the Western world (oz included....look at Dame Edna...granted the bloke who plays her isnt actually gay, but the concept is there).

Sporting stars are a league of their own. You cannot possibly tell me that America would be accepting of an American footballer who told the media he was in fact gay. A gay soccer player in the UK would be putting his life at risk (no joke) if he came out to the club fans. Think about the enormous number of sports stars out there and how many are "straight", American or Australian. Statistically there would be a proportion who are gay....but there is no chance of coming out the clsoet. Diving is a sport that is regarded as less "macho" so being gay in that field of sport is more accepting (god knows why).....unfortunately his sponsorship has still suffered.

Ian Roberts. He wasn't an AFL player, though, he played rugby league. I was jsut about to post about him, he's one of the few openly gay athletes around.
