Two Dutch TV presenters posed in a sexy photoshoot together to combat homophobia:

    Video here.

The whole video is in Dutch, but there's some information online in English.

ETA: Thoughts? Could something like this happen in your country?

I really doubt anything could happen here, without significant backlash of course.
When it's Westboro's harassment it's "free speech" but somehow this isn't.

Aside, reading about them being straight is rather surprising, they pulled it off pretty good for not being into eachother.

Very cute. They did pull that off well for two straight dudes.

Wow, I think that's definitely an interesting approach to awareness! Especially so since they're both straight. I honestly don't know what to make of it. On the one hand, it could send the message that they're just faking and that can be used as ammo for homophobes who think all gay people are doing that. Yet on the other hand, I think it's a great way to open things up and get a conversation started. Also just the fact that it was with these two men that a lot of people probably know and like, and that they could do this and be totally open about it and they didn't have to say "no homo" or act weird about it in any way because it's not weird.

    Mixed but largely bad:

    Good:
    • Two more allies to the cause
    • There's the idea that it sends the message to other straight guys "if we can comfortably kiss and fondle each other naked, there's no excuse to be uncomfortable being around gay people in general".
    • Its a bit of masturbatory fodder for the masses *shrugs*
    • The clothing is nice I suppose

    Bad:
    • It's for a gay magazine which immediately negates any actual impact against homophobia (as presumably the readership aren't going to be anti-gay!)
    • There is still the whole idea of gay being taboo or "bold" which is fuelling this very shoot (the photoshoot is saying being gay isn't an issue, yet is in a sense "making" it a big issue by putting it on the front cover like "LOOK, TWO STRAIGHT MEN ARE KISSING! OMG!")
    • It's reducing sexuality down to sex, and a rather specific view on that too. How many gay people actually pose naked and in skimpy underwear on the beach and in fields? Unless its just me who hasn't? What would have been 10,000x more powerful would be to show gay people (and actual gay people even) "in their natural element". Show them crashed out on the couch, or grocery shopping, or at the movies. You can still "stylize" it and make it all arty, it's called fashion photography!
    • I don't like the idea that they have had to "train" for the photo-shoot. They criticise their (actually rather perfect looking) bodies and describe making themselves "photo ready". A more powerful shoot given this is marketed to the gay community where body image is a problem would be for them to just pose in their usual form (lumps, bumps, acne etc on show)

This reminds me of the "Warwick Rowers" (although its not as bad) who claim to "fight homophobia" by stripping off and posing homo-erotically for "humorous" effect. In reality (aside from the funding to gay charities) I think it actually makes homophobia worse by promoting the historic idea that male nudity or men naked together is inherently funny, crude or weird. Ultimately is putting their skewed heterosexual viewpoints on what it means to be gay (i.e. "it's two men naked, which is funny") out there.

We often here criticisms about faux-lesbianism in pop music and the media, I think these sort of things are the male equivalent but more damaging (as at least faux-lesbianism doesn't imply being a lesbian is funny or weird).

What I think we need to truly tackle homophobia is more actual gay visibility.

I enjoyed that video. I do not think that anything similiar wound happen in America though. Despite the fact that's there are a lot of different people in America, there would always be *that* group that throws a fit about "immorality" and "values" and what not. They probably exist in other countries too, but it seems more profound in America.

The idea is that there are a lot of photo shoots like this of straight couples, so why aren't there any of gay couples. The idea behind this seems to be to try and normalize homosexuality.

Who cares? Society's worship of celebrities and worship of conventionally beautiful people are two things I really dislike, and they are combined together in this video.

:rolle: I didn't ask for your permission. The OP asked for thoughts on the video. Get off your high horse. I appreciate celebrities that support us but it's often overly sexualized.

They've raised a perfectly valid point though - you cannot just accept everything labelled "fighting homophobia" on face value, not when in reality it may be worthless or even have negative effects on the community.

In this instance to what degree can we honestly say this is tackling homophobia? Is there not a shred of self-promotion involved?

And besides, the OP asked for everybody's thoughts.

    "meh"

Good cause, but it's just furthering stupid stereotypes about gay men...Two straight men fighting homophobia! Good!...by acting like most of the world think we act...Couldn't have been two normally built guys, I dunno, buying coffee? Doing the groceries? Hanging out the laundry...this isn't really even an LGBT issue I have tbh lol, it's just sexualization all over again, except this time women get to take a break and men are put on the podium...

    ---------- Post added 7th Jul 2016 at 08:19 PM ----------

Also imagine if this was two "beautiful" women fondling each other on a beach...
