Someone better versed than I am in US constitutional law, is there a simple legal mechanism for the use of federal executive power to abolish a practice like that? Or is Clinton's campaign merely expressing an aspiration she would work towards?

I don't know enough about executive power... But I'd guess this is more "aspiration" than anything.

Being more than slightly cynical, I'd guess the biggest aspiration is simply Clinton's aspiration to be President, and the fact that LGBT voters can help her get elected.

I look forward to Trump supporting both sides of the issue and simultaneously denying that he ever supported the other side.

Damn son, now that's something you don't hear everyday. If this is true then consider me won over. She's not the best person in the world for sure, but if she can do some good then I guess I'm okay with it. I'd take it over some silly budget breaking "Great wall of Murica" any day.

I'd sleep a lot easier at night if one of the biggest child abuse loopholes in the country was finally put down anyway.

If there was, shouldn't the current President have already done it?

I'm not an attorney, but a friend of mine who is one says no. What she means is she's promising to push for Congress to pass legislation to do it. One potential problem is if she gets elected but the Congress stays essentially the same is that Congress and the Senate will merely say that her election wasn't a mandate for her policies, merely that the majority of the voting public found Trump too offensive as a person. Among the straight people I know, very few of them even know what conversion therapy is, much less cares about the issue in this election. Still, it's good that she's taking a stand on this issue.

I wasn't aware of this (that is, Hillary's plan to end these therapies), it's amazing if those get banned!

I really like Vox by the way, especially their videos =]

This election is less of a "Who'd make a better president?" and more of a "Who's the lesser of two evils?"

Hilary may not be great but at least she plans to do some good. This argument would've sold me if I were an American voter.

With respect, marginalizing the same community you claim to believe in and support because you're too intertwined with your political beliefs goes against what we (in theory at least) stand for. It's like that incident on Twitter when a gay Trump supporter who was HIV+ received messages about how they (the people who wrote the messages, most of whom were LGBT themselves) hoped he would die of AIDS before he got the chance to vote. I've left a link of his original twitter post should you want to look at the comment section and some of his other posts.

I would also like to add that Mr. Trump has been more gay-friendly than his opponent.
Hillary Clinton voted against gay marriage and has been against it more than Trump has been and she came out in favour of it in 2013 when she realized it was the popular thing to do, especially considering that she was planning to run for office.

Trump has also moved the Republican Party to be very acceptable towards LGBT folk with RNC speaker Peter Thiel receiving a standing ovation that wasn't properly covered by the MSM. Trump also has the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay-friendly conservative group, whose lead members are openly gay.

I can think of a whole list of other things as to why Trump will be beneficial for the gay community, but since this isn't what the thread is about feel free to message me and we can discuss them there.

I hate Hillary, and I hate Trump, but I understand why people think either might be "the less of two evils". Still, if I could vote, I'd go for Hillary atm, despite thinking she's a criminal who should be arrested, not put on a pedestal like she has been.

I don't think there is a way and as others have said, it expresses more the sentiment than the potential actions she could take.

There is always the issue of federalism and how certain matters are privileges of the states and this might well fall under that scope.

That said, any lawyer worth his salt would probably say she could take some small, concrete but ultimately rather symbolic steps. Perhaps she could direct the Education secretary to withhold federal funds from schools that contract with conversion therapists (if that's even an issue). Or, that therapists that practice conversion would not be on the "approved list" of healthcare providers for federal employees' health insurance.

There isn't a mechanism to outright do it (and most of what politicians say is rhetoric without substance anyway, a porterhouse to their base), but I'm sure somewhere, somehow something could be done, but not on the scope and scale of what she promises. Still, it's that safeguard that would prevent a Trump administration from basically fucking our Constitution and then using it to wipe his behind.
