Hi All, Im Malaysian , Muslim and gay...first of all, the Muslims in Malaysia are generally good people, I dont have bad vibe towards them despite many of them believe gays should be incarcerated and such as they have been brainwashed by religious dogma and they do not wish harm on other people even if they are LGBT. However, we do have a Islamic affairs department called JAKIM whose job is to impose their own interpretation of Islam on nitty gritty issues like homosexuality. JAKIM is the closest thing to a Sharia police or probably an Islamic Gestapo though their jurisdiction is severely limited and they cannot bring criminal charges, but being caught by them doing unIslamic things would mean embarrassment.Many Malaysian Muslim dislike them as they act as if they represent god.

PETALING JAYA: A government-endorsed parenting guide that describes symptoms of homosexuality has kicked up a storm on the Internet, with human rights and sexuality activists expressing shock and disgust.

Sin Chew Daily today reported that the Education Ministry had endorsed the guide as helpful to parents and teachers.

It was launched during a seminar in Penang yesterday. The event, billed as “Parenting in addressing the issue of LGBTs (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders)”, was officiated by Deputy Education Minister Mohd Puad Zarkashi.

The guide listed four symptoms each for gays and lesbians:

For gays:

Muscular body and a fondness for showing off the body by wearing clothing, such as by wearing V-necks and sleeveless tops

A preference for tight and bright coloured clothes

An inclination to be attracted to men

A tendency to carry big handbags, similar to the kinds used by women

For lesbians:

Showing attraction to women

Distancing themselves from women other than their girlfriends

A preference for hanging out, sleeping and dining with women

Absence of feelings for men

Teaching hate

When asked to comment, activist and Seksualiti Merdeka co-founder Pang Khee Teik initially said: “I don’t even know how to respond.”

However, he proceeded to flay the Education Ministry for being “only interested in teaching hate, promoting inequality and playing politics”.

“The Ministry of Education is now officially a bully,” he said. “I never presumed to be in the position to teach the meaning of education to the people running the Ministry of Education. But it has come to that.”

He said education should be used to provide equal opportunity and the realisation of the human potential to collaborate with one another in building a better world.

Pang, who is openly gay, said that studies around the world had proven that discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity would harm individuals as well as society.

“Many of these studies originate in countries which have made such mistakes in their past and who are desperately now trying to undo the wounds that discriminatory policies had left on the psyche of their people,” he said.

He said the ministry should instead pay heed to such LGBT issues as suicide, forced marriages, depression and bullying.

“It must stop this inhuman campaign against vulnerable children,” he said. “It should teach all children to be confident and to respect each other no matter who they are.”

Pang offered to provide guidance to “poorly educated” education officials through his organisation.

“It’s not too late. There are a few good books and studies out there they could read instead of relying on pseudo-experts and quacks.”

Absurd campaign

Fadiah Nadwa Fikri of Lawyers for Liberty said the Education Ministry’s campaign was absurd.

“I don’t see why they are doing this,” she said. “This group is already being persecuted and intimidated. And now they are trying to expose people and continue to attack them instead of trying to understand the whole problem. They are forgetting human rights.

“These people blur the lines between personal beliefs and a criminal act,” she said.

The Sin Chew report quoted the guide as saying: “Once the children have these symptoms, immediate attention should be given.”

The guide was published by Yayasan Guru Malaysia Bhd and the Putrajaya Consultative Council of Parents and Teachers Associations.

Yesterday’s seminar was reportedly the 10th such event. Earlier seminars were held in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Perak.

The guide was distributed to all who attended the seminar.

Bernama quoted Mohd Puad as saying parents and teachers should know these symptoms so that they could address social problems amongst teenagers, especially those still in school.

“It is now time that this LGBT issue is discussed openly and not treated as taboo,” he was quoted as saying.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — The federal Islamic authorities have suggested that sexual orientation can be changed with extensive training, in a recent video explaining how Muslims can approach the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

The 3:08-minute video in Malay language has since received mixed reception from some Malaysians, with several praising it as a softer strategy that does not promote hate against the maligned minority, while others felt it still fails to acknowledge the community.

“Fact is, there are those among Muslims that has non-heterosexual orientation but remains steadfast on the path of Islam.

“For them, this is a test of Allah, and they choose to face the test appropriate with what Islam demands,” said the video shared by social activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi in a public post on his Facebook profile yesterday.

Dr Mohd Izwan Yusof, an assistant senior director of the Islamic Development Department Malaysia’s (Jakim) family, social and community department, corroborated in a separate post that his group was responsible for the video.

In the video, Jakim had likened sexual orientation with horse-riding, claiming that when someone realises that he has “different” orientation from others and wishes to change that orientation, he should receive extensive training and guidance.

Jakim said to change one’s sexual orientation, one must intend to do so for God’s sake instead of being forced and repent one's homosexuality, in addition to leaving activities that would lead to same-sex relations.

It also urged a repentant homosexual to fulfill his sexual desires through marriage, or subdue such desires by among others resorting to fasting.

The video also advised Muslims to be patient, and to help their friends change and return to the straight path, if they discover them to be LGBT.

Conversion therapy which consists of psychological treatment or spiritual counseling to change a person's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual is widely seen by medical and scientific community as potentially harmful and a form of pseudoscience.

The practice is opposed and has been legally challenged, or even banned, in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Ecuador, Israel, Lebanon, Malta, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In 2014, several medical and gender experts questioned the “success” of Jakim’s spiritual rehabilitation camp for transgenders, insisting they need medical care to transition them into their affirmed gender identities rather than rehabilitation to return them to what some may consider “normal”.

At the time of writing, the video has been watched over 9,000 times, and received positive response from Facebook users on Syed Azmi’s profile.

“Congratulations Jakim for producing a video with no elements of hatred towards the LGBT. I hope Jakim’s missionary department can remind each state to not act rough towards the LGBT,” said a top comment by user Azira Aziz.

“The video's soft approach on advising, respect for privacy and emphasis on free will is definitely commendable. This is far better than saying they're sinners, they're going to hell,” said another top comment by user Luq Harith.

The video however received criticisms for suggesting that homosexuality can be changed, such as by user Sheelabanu Sri Jaya who said, “This video is going to make people believe that there is a way to 'change' homosexuals into heterosexuals. No way you can do that.”

“I was not impressed by the video. And it's very dangerous for them to encourage heterosexual marriage as a way to ‘fix’ the LGBT person, for the person, the spouse AND the children they may bear,” commented user Huda Mutalib.

“Calling for reparative therapy is not exactly good intentions, let alone genuine respect that LGBT people should live their lives the way they want it to be,” added user Zulaikha Mohammad.

This sounds very similar to what fundamentalist Baptists believe in the US, so it seems in some ways so called Christians and some Muslims have something in common.

About the bolded, as far as I know, it's only been banned in a few states. If Pence becomes president, it might even become government sponsored. :rolle:

Sadly, conversion therapy is still legal in Canada. Only Ontario managed to get rid of it. But that was recently as 2012 I believe. Still, very very scary stuff here. Kind of like a camp in itself for LGBTQ folk.

Pence should never get this damn fingers on that stuff. He could potentially damage so many people by that talk about supporting the therapy. Either they kill themselves or they become mentally deranged-its a win win for him.

I frequently hang out with my friends and love my brother and father deeply....guess I'm not a lesbian then^^. I think I'll celebrate my newfound straightness by kissing a girl. It's totally not gay if I don't fit the description, right?

Yeah and I wish I was Emma Watson's wife. Not going to happen for a long time. But, we are slowly making progress. Raising awareness, pushing politicians to ban it, support scientific and first relation documentation on the negative effects of Conversation Therapy and eventually it will die down.

I only agree with conversion therapy if it's a consensual adult. I do believe it should be banned if a parent does it to their kid since most likely they do not consent to it. tbh I have thought about going to conversion therapy, but I am happy with who I am now.

The problem with conversation therapy ( well...one of the problems anyway) is that it doesn't work except on the surface level.

I'd be perfectly fine with conversion therapy if 1) it actually worked, 2) it weren't painful, and 3) the people doing it were consenting to it. You can help 2) and 3) but you'll never solve 1). Maybe someday they'll be able to do brain surgeries altering orientation but there's no theoretical way that any activities in a camp or therapy would do it.

It would be more palatable if all those things were true. But then people would still be more likely to consider gay feelings to be a mental illness. I think I prefer things how they are, and for one don't want to change myself in the slightest.
