"Andrade admitted killing Zapata, but his defense argued that he acted in the heat of passion after discovering that Zapata was biologically male. The defense asked for a lesser verdict, such as second-degree murder or manslaughter."

That's the stupidest defense ever. What sort of "heat of passion" is that?

It's pretty much exactly the same as the "homosexual panic" defence which, unbelievably, has been used pretty successfully.

    . . .

What gets me is that even after killing her, he still stubbornly referred to Angie as 'he'.

To kill her and then go on to refer to her as "it" or "he" is awful... THings like this shouldn't happen. One would think that after ending racial segregation and gender segregation we would realize that segregation based on sexual/gender orientation is not a good thing either...

Thats so sad. But the worst part of all this is that only 11 states would recognise that as a hate crime. What about all the others!

This just makes me really fucking sick. It just makes me wonder if this guy had been taught about the LGBT community when he was younger, learned to empathize, maybe he would've handled the situation differently.
