Marriage Equality: Maine and New Hampshire

It appears that Six by Twelve (meaning all 6 New England states allowing same-sex marriage by 2012) will be accomplished as the states of Maine and New Hampshire take up and vote on marriage equality this week. However, both aren't guaranteed and might fail.

It is noteworthy that 55 percent of New Hampshire residents support same-sex marriage, whereas only 39 percent oppose it. Governor Lynch doesn't support gay marriage, but it's unclear whether he will sign it into law or veto it.

It seems that the marriage bill in Maine has a likelihood of going to a referendum, but none of the news articles mention what support is like for gay marriage in Maine.

Anybody know how likely it would be for gay marriage to be legalised if it was to become a public vote?

The New Hampshire Senate has approved the same-sex marriage bill, the House had previously approved this. Now it is up to Governor Lynch whether or not he will sign it into law. It will come into effect in January 2010 if enacted.

New Hampshire would be #5, and hoping Maine and New York become #6 and 7 soon.

whats saddens me is the thought that one person can override a passed legeslation to require that equality and freedom and liberty for all be upheld, seeing as they are the very founding of this country.

The Maine Senate has also passed a bill allowing same sex marriage. We are waiting on the New Hampshire and Maine House of Representatives to take up the issue now as well as uncertain veto threats from the governors of the two states.

Exciting day to live in New England.

The Maine House is expected to pass it easily, and it will go on to the Gov. In Maine, opponents will be able to launch a "citizen's veto" of the measure by gathering signatures. So in the end, it is likely to appear on the ballot.

"Maine Governor John Baldacci once opposed gay marriage, but said earlier in April he is keeping an open mind on the issue."
    Just thought people should know.

The Maine House will now take up the issue on Tuesday, it has already passed in the Senate there.
