"The attempt to prove that homosexuality is determined biologically has been dealt a knockout punch. An American Psychological Association publication includes an admission that there's no homosexual "gene" -- meaning it's not likely that homosexuals are born that way.

For decades, the APA has not considered homosexuality a psychological disorder, while other professionals in the field consider it to be a "gender-identity" problem. But the new statement, which appears in a brochure called "Answers to Your Questions for a Better Understanding of Sexual Orientation & Homosexuality," states the following:

"There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles...."

That contrasts with the APA's statement in 1998: "There is considerable recent evidence to suggest that biology, including genetic or inborn hormonal factors, play a significant role in a person's sexuality."

Peter LaBarberaPeter LaBarbera, who heads Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, believes the more recent statement is an important admission because it undermines a popular theory.

"People need to understand that the 'gay gene' theory has been one of the biggest propaganda boons of the homosexual movement over the last 10 [or] 15 years," he points out. "Studies show that if people think that people are born homosexual they're much less likely to resist the gay agenda."

Matt Barber with Liberty Counsel feels the pronouncement may have something to do with saving face. "Well, I think here the American Psychological Association is finally trying to restore some credibility that they've lost over the years by having become a clearly political organization as opposed to an objective, scientific organization," he states. (Hear audio report)

With the new information from the APA, Barber wonders if the organization will admit that homosexuals who want to change can change.

Matt Barber"It's irrefutable from a medical standpoint that people can leave the homosexual lifestyle," he argues. "Homosexuality is defined by behavior. Untold thousands of people have found freedom from that lifestyle through either reparative therapy or through -- frankly, most effectively -- a relationship with Jesus Christ."

LaBarbera agrees. "Change through Christ is possible -- and it's one of the most heartwarming aspects of the whole gay debate," he shares. "Many men and women have come out of homosexuality, mostly through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The fact that these professional organizations will not study that, will not acknowledge that, shows how 'in the tank' they are for the homosexual movement."

LaBarbera stresses that even though elites will not recognize the change, that does not mean the change does not exist. In fact, both Barber and LaBarbera believe that God changes people through Christ -- regardless of the sin."

I'm not sure I can believe this at all because it was from OneNewsNow.com which is part of the American Family Association which as you know are the people constantly putting forward things such as Prop 8. I'd like to hear people's ideas about this 'report' or whether you think there is or isn't a gay gene.

RAARH! That just infuriates me. LaBarbera seems to have the reading comprehension of a water cracker.

Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles...." does not say ANYTHING! It specifically says "We don't know!" It's also totally out of context, which CHANGES THE MEANING!

  3. I think there's a middle ground here sort of. I never thought there was a "Gay gene," but that doesn't mean it's not inborn. The more popular theory nowadays is that a person is exposed to a certain combination/amount of hormones while they're developing and that's how sexuality develops.

I went to a Christian school for two years, and they tried to feed me the "Gays can change" story...

As soon as I hit the words "gay agenda", I stopped reading. What the hell. God, you'd think we'd go door to door with pamphlets, which is, you know, COMPLETELY UNLIKE SOMEBODY WE KNOW. >:| "Hi, I'd like to talk to you about fabulousness!"

Yeah, because so many people would keep "picking" homosexuality with assholes like that making life miserable. I sure love me some persecution in the morning! Mmm, goes great on toast.

I don't know if there's a gay gene, or if it's some combination of biology and psychology or whatever, alls I know is I grew up assuming I was straight until life proved me wrong. My extended family are all evangelicals! If it were nurture and/or Jesus Power, I'd be straight as a freakin' board. >:/

It's better to laugh off such ridiculous articles...

Frankly... NO. And wouldn't a man having a relationship with Jesus Christ be a HOMOSEXUAL ACT? OH SNAP!

Exactly. It's not because they're no "gay gene" that we're not born gay.

The more older brothers you have, the more likely you turn out gay.

If your a twin, its very likely either your both gay or neither of you is gay.

These things are genetic. Not nurture. Sure they dont prove anything with the 100% stamp of approval, but the stats back it up.

Identical twins... because they share the same genetic makeup. Fraternal twins are not always the same.

Anyway... Slowly as science progresses, more light will be shed on this but at the moment, it shouldn't matter. The fact is people are gay or bi or trans etc but they still are people.

I'd guess hormones over the gay gene. It's still nature and not nurture though.

    One gene = no
Many genes that contribute = maybe

They gave away their reputability when they said that homosexuality ("a sin") could be overcome with "a love of Jesus"

The source tells you all you need to know. This is just AFA propaganda. Nothing to see here.

this is complete bull. it says that a gene hasn't been discovered and they think nature and nurture have to do with it. but thats only a half answer because they havent had tests that can even come close to proving that being gay ISNT genetic but they just decided to leave that part out.

I stopped reading once he brought christ into it.Ccan anyone say "biased".

Quick thought. For an organization of fundamentalist I find it funny that they use science to debunk these "myths" whne science is the very feild that debunks most of theirs. They are aginst science...unless is supports their views in an miniscule kind of way, even then they dont really understand it. I love Iorny.

I don't like the added part about "Gay agenda" or "change through a relationship with Jesus Christ". I agree that you cannot become straight or gay by choice, otherwise I'd probably have been straight awhile ago. But to say that it is unknown what causes homosexuality is perfectly honest and pretty accurate.

I had a teacher once who said that the issue shouldn't be what the cause is so much as what the reaction is. If homosexuality was proven genetic, wouldn't people ban us from having children, or our relatives from having children either? Rather than try to have our sexual orientation justified, we should be able to just be ourselves!

It's called science and it tends to work and explain things. If you're debating the gene thing then you are wrong due to the fact that this group is correct. Do I agree with their religious standpoint? No

    Doesn't mean they're wrong.

The only reason I brought it in was because I thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss. I actually had a debate on YouTube with a guy named superman123 or something like that (I hate he's using Superman's name >_>) and he compared us gay men and women to rapists, murderers, pedophiles, the whole lot, and that we're as bad as people who have sex with animals too. Just because 'the Bible condemns [us] all under the same category'. Though he was a Bible teacher, so basically his actual education is like...zero.
