Despite the fact that they spent a ridiculous amount of money and resources to spread hate and get an anti-gay rights Republican elected in Iowa House District 90, NOM's candidate was defeated in a special election tonight by Democrat Curt Hanson. The Republican (Stephen Burgmeier) had everything going for him; being a member of the opposition party during a bad economy, a somewhat unpopular governor, a controversial social issue (marriage equality) to rally the right-wing base, etc. For the future of marriage equality in Iowa, this is huge. It appears backlash from the Supreme Court decision was minimal, and keeping this seat makes it harder for the Iowa GOP to get a Constitutional Amendment on the ballot in the next few years. As I had hoped and expected, Iowans look like they are willing to "live and let live", and refuse to fall for the tactics of the religious far-right.
The Iowa Republican Party is trying hard to spin this; they claim that this is a strongly Democratic district, and thus it is a huge accomplishment for them that it was even close. Of course, the last time this seat was open in 2002, the Democrat only won by 55 votes... :roflmao:
The republican one looks like a member of the flds... probably is. NoM is a fundementalist mormon organization.
