So I'm scared. There are people who are trying to make a .gay domain for gay websites. There are two groups pushing for it.

    Here's the story:
    http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/23/competing-groups-press-for-a-gay-internet-suffix/

My worry is this. We are trying so hard to fit in and be accepted, and we have groups that are making us look as though we don't.

Plus sites like EC who offer support on a global level to people who want to remain anonymous may be forced or switch over to .gay so people seeking out support will have .gay on their history (causing unwanted outages) or may cause countries to completely block support sites in general but I dont know if sites will be forced to go into a .gay ith this passes so if someone can answer that that would be great.

My last worry is .gay's turning into a sort of .XXX for porn which wont look good for anyone.

thats my opinoin though, whats yours?

We shouldn't be trying to segregate ourselves more, the idea is stupid.

I put 'I don't know' because I don't want to rule out the idea based on initial concerns. But, I also don't see a point to this. And the article did nothing to clear that up for me. :/

Why are they trying to make us seem so different from everyone else... No segregation please.

I dont see why it would be a bad thing. And a website is NOT going to be forced onto .gay because thats not how the internet works.

Segregation is one thing. (All websites with gay content must go to a .gay website)

Targeting your audience is another. (All websites that want to target LGBT people can use a .gay website)

Im not a huge fan of the "OMG OMG LIEK SEGREGATION!!11" cries every time someone tries to do something specifically for LGBT people. Drinking from different water fountions is one thing, but come on. Its hard enough for most LGBT people when they are all alone or in very few numbers because of there location. Not everyone can get to a gay meca like new york or toronto. We are few in numbers, so trying to group up is natural for us. How else do we meet people? We use *gay* themed sites, we go to *gay* themed groups, we drink at *gay themed bars. Its not a segregation thing, its a mating and comfort in numbers things.

Like everything i get that there are lines to cross. Sometimes we can separate ourselves from the rest of the world too much. Things like an "LGBT only bus" maybe. But i firmly believe a .gay domain is not one of these. LGBT people THRIVE of the internet. Its how most of us connect to other LGBT people and how many of us find partners. Its a tool that panders so much to minoritys. Id bet alot of people on EC never knew another gay person before joining this site.

Basically I honestly dont think .gay would get used much, but i think its a nice option.

I also put I don't know. To me, it depends on the trends in Internet-land.

If we start getting all these domains that categorize content like .gay .sport .news .blog .fun .music , etc. then I think it would be fine. But that just hasn't seemed to be going anywhere. So until then, no. And I doubt companies/organizations would even use it. Anyway, no one is going to force websites to use a specific domain even if .gay ever got created.

It's completly unnecessary. Few people use the .tv, .biz, .xxx as it is...Something tells me .gay would be used even less.

  12. It's just unnecessary.

The last thing the gay rights movement needs is further commercialization.

I voted I don't know because if it was to become a new domain I doubt anyone would know. But then it wouldn't look to good when my mom claims she wants to look on my laptop and then quickly looks at the history :frowning2:

Meh. I think it'd look kinda tacky. Like .biz. I'm wary of going to websites that end in .biz.

    I don't figure it'd hurt anything, but I'd never buy one. =P

I agree with Greggers in that it doesn't sound like a completely horrid idea. It would likely make it easier to find other LGBT sites and organizations, etc. But, it most likely wouldn't be used enough to be worthwhile, anyway.

If your argument against a .gay domain is about it "outing" people when it shows up on a history check, you have to realize closeted gay people are not actually the only kinds of gay people. Shocking, i know. There are plenty of proud and out gays who would love to visit a .gay site if they want to join an LGBT matchmaking site, online community, vacation planner, bookstore, videostore, ect. ect. You have to look at this as an option, not a mandatory enforcement. Even if you dont want to use or have a .gay site you cant really decide that the entire world should be void of one.

Im really only arguing this side because no one else seems to be taking this side, and it should be said for the sake of it :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
