Ha!! My homophobic father lives there. I'm VERY glad to hear this!! Surprised, but glad.... The article isn't loading fully for me (dumb internet connection), so I'm curious to see what's going on. Hopefully all turns out well!

That is REALLY surprising. When my sister was there a few years ago, she found Mexico to be a VERY strange place when it comes to homosexuality.

Being an anthropology major, her strangest observation was the caricaturing of the gay man in the Mexican media. The stereotype is dorky looking and short, with thick-rimmed glasses and slicked hair. They are used as objects of comedy in the numerous sitcoms, and are written as the kinda-creepy, keep-to-themselves 30-something type whose mothers are always trying to set them up. The most confusing part was there is no subtext concerning their sexuality; it is an open joke that everyone somehow knows but no one mentions. Literally,

"Phillipe, you should go out with Mercedes, she is a good women!"
"Nah, ma. She has brown hair."

Cue laugh track. The humor basically centers around "Haha, he doesn't objectify women! What a PUTO! (equivalently, "fags," except it literally means "male whore")" This goes so far that one of my sister's gay Mexican friends actually and sincerely apologized for not taking advantage of her when they were making out for fun (at a gay bar, no less).

There is also a weird undercurrent of "its okay to marry, have kids and a family, and go screw men in the night." My sister even knew a guy there whose father had done this, hated him for it because of the pain it put his mother through, and STILL planned on doing the SAME thing, and saw nothing wrong with that.

Furthermore, the law is in general designed to ensure that all women are escorted. Two women can not generally share a hotel room, for instance. My sister had to lie that her friend was actually her sister in order to get a place to sleep one night.

On the flip side, the general populace of Mexico City is apparently gay-blind. They can't see a gay bar when it is called Steel Magnolias, is covered in neon blasting techno, has blacked out windows, and is surrounded by hot male bods in short-shorts looking to pick up customers/one night stands. Also, she caught plenty of examples of functional gay couples around, and plenty of generally functional people.

But I did NOT see Mexico passing same sex marriage. Like EVER.

Y'know, someone somewhere will parlay this into more justification for the Great American-Mexican wall. :eusa_doh:

Mexico as a country isn't exactly ready for it.
I'm surprised no one's been corrected on here for that fact. It's like D.C. A little district where it is now legal.
