A Ugandan pastor who screened same-sex pornography in a church to try to bolster support for proposed anti-homosexuality legislation has been condemned by gay rights groups.

Martin Ssempa, one of the main backers of a Bill that would impose the death penalty for some offenders, aired the explicit slideshow to several hundred people during a church service in Kampala on Wednesday. Explaining his decision to display the images, the evangelical preacher said it was necessary to educate people "about what homosexuals do".

He told the BBC's Network Africa programme: "In Africa, what you do in your bedroom affects our clan, it affects our tribe, it affects our nation."

While Ssempa represents the extreme end of widely held homophobic views in Uganda, he does carry strong influence. On his website he describes himself as "consultant to the government of Uganda", and his congregants this week included David Bahati, the MP who submitted the private member's Bill to Parliament last year.

The porn stunt caused anger among gay activists. South African-based gay rights group Behind the Mask described it as "twisted homophobic propaganda".

Frank Mugisha, the chairperson of Sexual Minorities Uganda, said Ssempa should be arrested for promoting pornography -- and questioned his religious values. "He is showing these images in a church. What does he stand for?"

In neighbouring Kenya, where anti-gay sentiment is also strong, Peter Njane of gay support group Ishtar said that by showing pornography Ssempa was trying to imply that being gay was "just about sex".

In fact, that is one of the main arguments of the pastor and politicians such as Bahati, who argue that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice. Although gay sex is already illegal in Uganda under colonial-era laws, they have whipped up public sentiment by insisting that tougher measures are needed to punish homosexuals who they say are "recruiting" children at schools.

The legislation calls for life imprisonment for anyone caught having gay sex, with the death penalty for repeat offenders or those with HIV. But the proposals have generated much opposition abroad, with the governments of Britain, the US and Canada, all significant donors to Uganda, leading the condemnation.

The pressure appears to have worked. Last month President Yoweri Museveni broke his silence on the bill, saying it did not necessarily reflect government policy and "foreign policy interests" would be considered before it was put to a vote. - guardian.co.uk © Guardian News and Media 2010

I wonder how this minister thinks this is okay. It's just awful! Every country in the world needs to speak up against this. I have written to Hillary Clinton and encourage others in the U.S. to do the same.

I feel so sorry for the LGBT people of Uganda and much of Africa!

    I think this is the key here;

Our governments in the Western world need to take a strong and vocal position on this as an inviolable human rights issue - as a crime against humanity. Regardless of where they might stand on LGBT concerns such as gay marriage, this is a fundamental matter of life and death. I agree with Becky that we need to write or contact our elected officials and make sure they dig in their heels and continue to withhold all financial and developmental support for Uganda until this abomination of a law is dead and gone.

I saw this on the bbc a few days back and I actual couldn't believe it at first. He's right though, people need to see what we're like because views like that come from lack of education. But showing gay porn like that is just wrong, especially as some in that congregation will have been children.
I went to a catholic school and from a young age we were told homosexuals were wrong and perverted and it made it really difficult for me to accept who I am. While a stunt like that will create homophobes, there have been people there who are lgbt in that audience who's lives will now be even harder because not only will everyone else hate them, they'll hate themselves.

I don't feel sorry for the GLBT people of Africa.. I feel sorry for ALL the people of Africa. For the cradle of civilization, most of the continent hasn't moved beyond the stone age. Their past and present is filled with tales of woe, plunder, and oppression..And the current water crisis does nothing to make it any better. Let's all hope for a brighter future for them!

This whole thing is bizarre. I can't help but think this pastor enjoyed/got a rise out of this whole thing. Perhaps one of the medical resources we need to send to Africa are some good therapists.

    Damn it.

well, since religious leaders tend to be the first offenders when it comes to child moestation, child porn, and in some parts of africa, corrective rape... should we really be surprised?

he got dumped by a pornstar, right?

^true but i think we need to remember we are dealing with politicians. If this isn't in the limelight and they are not lobbied about it i wouldn't cannot expect them to do anything. My biggest fear is this will actually go through and people here will be to caught up in their own thing to think about what is going on in Africa (wouldn't be the first time). They are talking about putting Genocide into Law and i have yet to see a single news story on the issue. The lack of action on the parts of the bigger governments and just the fact that this is being considered is absolutely disgusting.

This would be at least the 2nd mini holocaust of Africa if it goes through (that i know of)

i think this is horrid and disgusting but im also evil and find this very funny.

these people are idiots and anyone who agrees with them is also an idiot.

the pope says not to give people condoms as its against nature so encouraging the spread of hiv and this lot is saying anyone with hiv kill them...they are going to wipe themselves out . this is less about gay rights in some respects and more about potential genocide as entire villages can be wiped out.

that are of the world sadly is rife with disease and hiv is no exception and these people are to ignorant to not understand that it isnt a gay disease in fact they will find where they are women are the main sufferers and it gets passed on and kids are born suffering :frowning2:

ok its not as funny in this respect now its just sad.

so im angry at there beliefs humoured by their reasoning and saddened for their lack of compassion.

    this is draining.

most people with hiv in the world are heterosexual... in africa, it would require killing a sizeable chunk of the population, including a huge chunk of christian males, as rape is considered christian in portions of africa.

    real smart douchebags...

I was thinking after reading this post... the guidelines for a sex scene in a straight porn film are very similar to those in gay porn film...the only difference are the genders involved. So, in theory, had he shown straight porn, technically speaking, one could say "Look at what straight people do behind closed doors! Disgusting!" Thus, if we are to kill the gays for their gay sex, in this alternative I've mentioned it would be justified to kill all straights. And then that'd be the majority of the world. How does any of that make sense?

It just occurs to me: Africa vs the West; Rich countries vs poor countries; civilization vs barbarism; straight vs gay; religion vs secularism; the educated vs the illiterate

what else? This is a tragic episode, but is it part of a monumental struggle going on that it is just part of. Are we in Armageddon and don't really notice it. Isn't this part of a war some have termed the culture wars:
I mean I think this is part of something bigger, even colossal. This thread really resonates with me. Please stop me if my thinking is wrong or just alarmist, but this story really sucks.
