Where did this come from? Last time I checked, the entire government was on the same page. This was so out of the blue (at least for me).

This is clearly stemming from the impending visit of the Pope. Portugal is a very Catholic country. I suspect the President is feeling pressured by his Holy Annoyance to act in a way considered favourable by the Catholic Church (also known as being a jackass).

    On the bright side:

But Spain has gay marriage legal and it's very Catholic too so that's interesting. I agree that it might have something to do with the Pope visiting.

The Portuguese president is just a fly on the wall to this issue. The government will override his veto and Portugal will sit on the right side of history! Go, Portugal! =D

But as Corina said, it's clear why he's doing it and their legislative body has the votes to override it so it's futile anyway.

What's the purpose of the Pope anyway? To make Catholics feel bad about themselves and annoy everyone else in the world who couldn't give a flying shit what he thinks?

I know sound silly right? However, the Pope has been the supreme voice of authority since Gregory the Great. Keep in mind the Pope had supreme authority over all the kings of Europe, even the East Roman Empire followed the will of the church, until their excommunication.

Sounds like a very archaic position.

I would like to have a word about this.

1st- this is only a rumour. The presidency has denied that any decision has been taken regarding the veto or passing of the bill.

2nd- Rádio Renascença is bias, because it's a openly catholic radio station, so whatever they are saying is not to be taken seriously.

3rd- Sócrates and his PS government really want to push this foward, and i believe it will.

4th- it's true Ratzinger is coming to Portugal in May (because the 13th of May is the day of the most important apparition of the Virgin of Fátima) and some have said that it would be a sore thumb to pass the law at the same time the man-in-little-red-Prada-shoes was visiting.

    Speaking as a Portuguese citizen:

    Olá Pessoal tudo bem?

    1. Lets hope not, compared to Spain we'll look like fools stuck in the past.

    2. Cavaco Silva is an ass face.
